  2. On my 466, 160mbs ram it takes about 9 hours for 90minutes about 12 for 120minute movies. Motion search precision is at Normal and dont use any filters.

  3. im aslo curious to know how long it takes for the people with the top notch CPUs....wondering if its worth me putting some money out for an upgrade...

  4. I don't know how fast you are looking for but I have a Athlon XP 1700+, 768 mb of DDR ram, and 7200 rpm hds and I encode straight vcd faster than realtime and SxVCD with motion search prec. at very slow at about 2 times realtime. Time to upgrade, dude. Build one yourself and save major bucks!
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

  5. Yes, definately upgrade your CPU. I used to have an AMD K6-500 and have now upgraded to a 1600XP and this gave me a 7 times increase in encoding speed. Definately worth it if you plan on making lots of VCD/SVCD/CVD's.

So the new XP 2200+ is out then? I just ordered one today... but seriously get an Athlon XP processor with a nice systemboard, the best you can afford. Stick with fast ram and your all set.

As much as you can live with; the faster your CPU, the faster your encodes will happen. Perhaps if you specify a budget amount (the crystal balls aren't working right this week).
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  9. I suppose it depends on whether your existing motherboard will support a new processor. If so, then just buy the chip & fan for £100 or so an away you go. If not, then get a new motherboard for £75. Don't worry about RAM as 256meg of PC133 (fifty quid) will be fine, so just buy whatever your motherboard will support.
