  1. There is something i've started to wonder recently as i ponder the purchase of a DVD-R drive. (I'm thinking about getting the Pioneer A04, in case you're curious)

Is it possible to take a VCD (which is usually two or three MPEGs at 352x240 since they are spanned across two or three CDs) and merge it down to one file, then burn this as a VCD on larger DVD-R media?

Would a standalone DVD player (I have a Toshiba SD2800) see this as a VCD (not caring that the media is clearly DVD media and not CD-R media) and just play it right on through?

I can't imagine the standalone players having some sort of media-specific disc check algorithm. That would needlessly limit a lot of the formats that the unit could play.

Has anyone considered this? done this? done this with a Toshiba SD2800?

Eager to hear what you all have to say,

  4. You may also want to check out the www.kvcd.net site. They have put out some TMPGEnc templates that will convert all your mpegs to DVD format. What I do now is if the movie is over 2 hours I put two ot these on one DVD-R in SVCD format. I just did Black Rain (126 Min) and Rules of Engagement (127) on one and a classic Cleopatra (243 Min) on one all in SVCD format and Works great. I have been able to put three movies in SVCD format on one DVD-R, but I would prefer to only do two again if over 2 hours. I do use some of the other templates to put SVCD of under 2 hours on one 80 Min CD

    Hey Bud,

    Couple of questions for ya....

Are you transcoding the audio from 44.1Khz to 48khz on your SVCDs ?

Are you doing the header patching thing to make a DVD authoring package accept the SVCD mpegs ?

Also, what package are you using to burn the SVCD mpegs to DVDr?

    Many thanks

  6. I use DVDiT to author and Burn......I use some of the templates on www.kvcd.net site. The one I use is KDVD Half DVD, I have a Panasonic LF 321 to burn with, TMPGEnc, this will convert your files (d2v), to 352x480 with a 48Hz audio, then I do a drag and drop into DVDiT, that's it, DVDiT will do the rest, I just have to set up a menu of some sort, buttons to tell which movie to play if more than one on the DVD-R, I have got up to three movie so one DVD-R, it all depends how long the movie is. You have 4.7 GB of smace to use, almost forgot one more thing, I have DVDiT convert the aduo to Digital 2 Ch non PCM that saves space on the DVD-R. I Recently put two movies one was 126 Min the other was 128 on one DVD-R in SVCD format.

The Half D1 template that kwag put together is based on a suggestion that I had made to him.

But Half-D1 is not SVCD resolution. It is a standard, albeit poorer quality, DVD resolution. Which is why DVDit has no problem with it.

The reason I was asking is that I get much better encodes use SVCD 480x480 than I do using the Half-D1 template and would prefer to burn the SVCD's directly.

    Thanks anyway ...

  8. The Kwag templates all work form, you can use what works for you, I do however disagree with you on the resolution..

The only thing I can say is look up the tables on this site that define resolutions and thier associated standards.

    Argue not, will I.
