Hi, I have built a very good home theatre system. Now all I need is a good DVD player. I'm runnig the video signal through component to an HD TV that is why I want to be progressive scan. I also use optical for audio signal to a bad ass onkyo receiver, so I need it to have optical out on it. The most important thing for me, is for it to be region free. I have an older pioneer 343 and I was unable to hack it, to become region free. I get the sound, but video does not go through component at all and through s-video I get a jumping black and white picture. I want it to be able to play burned vcds and svcds. Is it better to get one that already has a hacked chip in it or get one and hack it. For some reason, I haven't seen any hacks for progressive scan dvd's. I know you guys like apex's here, but I want something more reliable than that - a good brand name. I used to work at circuit city and know that every other apex comes back broken after a week. I can get get my hands on one of the harman/kardons, but I was unable to hack the 50 or the 5.

The pioneer DV-444S is progressive scan, i have one and it is fantastic, plays EVERYTHING i put in it, svcd etc no problem.
Unfortunately i bought mine without the region free mod, for £160. The player is available from a few online places pre-modded to be region free, i think techtronics do it for about £200-220...
I now need to get mine modded to be region free, and i'm not feeling like buying another player! Techtronics want £85(NOT inc. V.A.T) to collect, chip & return the thing...
If anyone knows another way, i.e D.I.Y mod chip, etc (Dreaming of a remote hack...! lol) let me know
Thanks,X5-452 -
As far as I know, its not possible to make a Pioneer player region free by using the remote to enter a 'hack'.
HOWEVER
If you check out my post titled:
All PIONEER Owners, want REGION FREE - w/no hardware mods?!?
You should be able to play DVDs from any other region.
PLEASE, PLEASE! Vote on the poll connected to my post, even if this doesn't work - no-one yet has even replied but as far as I can see, there are no other multiple-machine pioneer hacks apart from mine! Where's all my thanks?!? Just kidding!SUPPORT : http://www.fightdivx.com

I think Philips 724 is progressive and it can be hacked. Also, Apex AD-2500 and Cyber Home 500.
Making a player region free does not guarantee that you can play DVDs from other regions successfully. If a DVD is from another region, chances are that it might be in PAL format rather than NTSC. So you will get a black and white screen with horizontal lines migrating up on the screen.
My Daewoo 9000N can play both PAL and NTSC and then it will put out the signal in NTSC so that the TV can display it. This has been a good play and can play just about anything other than DVD-RW.
I just researched and verified that Apex 2500, which is progressive, can also can play both Pal and NTSC and put out the signal in NTSC.
Hope this helps.
