  1. I download a couple of VCDs / SVCDs and some work fine in my DVD player and some the tracking is messed up, so i decided to try it on my older tv, which has V-Hold knob to adjust the tracking, and i can finally watch the VCDs / SVCDs that didnt work before, except that they are all in black and white (normal DVDs and previously working VCDs / SVCDs are in color though) any ideas on why and how to fix it?

    Thanks
    Alex

I heard a lot of people talking about the black and white thing. They said it is caused when playing a pal video on a NTSC TV, or vice-versa.

  4. There are 2 ways around this.

    1) Go and get yourself a cheap APEX player at $60, and then you can watch PAL or NTSC discs.

    2) Go to http://www.tmpgenc.net/ and DL TMPGenc. Then read this to convert your PAL video to NTSC: http://www.vcdhelp.com/pal2ntsc/pal2ntsc.htm

    That's it.

  5. when u say apex player, u mean any player that supports pal?
    or only apex?

  6. Exactly. But since Apex are the least expensive on the market, why would you buy anything else?

I use a $170 Pioneer for NTSC, and the $60 Apex player for my PAL vids. Both play the NTSC perfectly, but the remote on the Apex is a horror and I prefer the options on the Pioneer. Since I don't have many PAL vids as compared to NTSC, the Pioneer gets used much more often.

  8. i am trying to follow the pal to ntsc converstion, but it keeps telling me i cant open the .mpg (svcd) file in TMPGnc!!! y not?

  9. Sorry, I don't really have the time right now to follow up anymore, either here or via instant messaging. I have about 8 hours of burning to do, and need to get moving along. I'll pop back in here in a few hours to see if you posted again.

Now back to your player. If the picture is scrolling (and doesn't matter if you adjusted the H hold to compensate), and if the picture is in B & W, then your player does NOT play PAL vids - it's that simple, no other way to explain it.

As I said from the beginning, either buy a DVD player to play your PAL vids (such as an Apex), or spend 2-8 hours reencoding the PAL vid to NTSC.

Either way will work; but it's your choice.

  10. well the reencoding isnt working ...
it keeps saying file type not supported ...

  11. Ok. Last reply for now, I really need to roll.

There could be dozens of reasons why TMPGenc doesn't open an MPEG file, and not enough time to go into right now. Either make another post here in the proper forum to seek help on that question, or post a message in the forums at the TMPGenc website. The people at TMP are very helpful.

As I said, I'll log back in here within a few hours or so to check any messages.

  12. PimpinD, just a thought. Have you checked your players manual/options menus. You dont say what model it is though I guess from what you said you are in a NTSC region. I know most european players can convert NTSC to PAL but usually default to outputing a signal that matches the source disk and so have to be set manually to NTSC or PAL output. Check yours, you might be in luck and it can convert Pal disks to NTSC output!

  14. i looked into my dvd player manual and WOW it does support pal, so know im completly lost, and lost 23hrs trying to convert pal to ntsc, the manual says
"This DVD Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. However in order for a DVD to play on this DVD player the color system of the DVD the tv and the dvd player should match" "If all three are not the same the picture my appear only in black and white, picture my roll continuously or picture my appear distorted."

GREAT, to bad when i put it into ntsc it goes black (the tv) and when i put it into PAL it goes black too, i have to leave it at multi to get color on the menu, and the vcds, but the pal vcds still come out in black know wut!!!!

  15. SO what that means is the player will ouput PAL or NTSC depending on what format is on the disc. Unfortunatley it will not take a Pal disc and output a NTSC signal to your TV. As your TV obviously does not support Pal (In europe multi standard TV's are pretty much the norm these days) then the only solution to playing Pal VCD's (or SVCD or DVD's) is to convert them to NTSC. As you have seen for yourself this is not the easiest thing to achieve but can be done.

About all I can say now is Good Luck!
