  1. Hi.

I recently upgraded to WindowsXP Pro from Windows 98. On Windows 98, all of my codecs (Huffyyuv, PicVideo, etc...) worked fine. I reinstalled all of my codecs, but none of them show up in VirtualDub. I have tried the common solution (changing the format of the video from RGB555), but this did not work. I tried all of the formats, but still none of my codecs show up. The only ones that do show up are the standard ones (Intel, Cinepak, Microsoft Video...). I also tried adding VIDC.YUY2=huffyuv.dll to system.ini, but that didn't even make the Huffyyuv codec show up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    vyce,

The only way I know to correct this problem is to remove the VirtualDub key from the system registry. Then after you reboot, when you run VirtualDub, it will re-install itself to the registry and locate all your installed codecs. However, this will also reset all of your current settings in VirtualDub. So if you have it configured the way you like it, you will need to do so again.

If you are not familiar with editing the registry, please get someone who is familiar with it to help you. Also, you should back up the registry before you begin. I'm not sure, but if you can set a recover point in XP, this would be a good idea before you start.

    To back up the Registry:

Go to Start and run Regedit.

Go to Registry and select Export Registry File.

You want to back up the entire registry, not just one branch. So be sure to Check the "ALL" radio button under Export Range.

Save it with an easy to remember name and somewhere that you will be able to easily find it, in the event you make a mistake.

To find and delete the VirtualDub key:

Next go to Edit and then select Find.

Type in virtualdub and click Find Next.

Not sure where it is in XP, but in Win2K it's in HKEY_USERS\Software\"Your user ID"\Freeware. (Your User ID is a combination of letters and numbers. If you have more than one user on the PC, you may have to look in several user ID folders to find yours. Although the "Administrator" is usually the first one under the "Default" User.)

Delete only the VirtualDub key, not the entire Freeware branch.

Then close Regedit and restart your PC.

Once it reboots, restart VirtualDub and it will load up just like when you first installed it. Click though the various message boxes and your Codecs should be back in the list...

  6. Thanks for your tips, Aris, but that still did not work. I still have the same amount of codecs. I even reinstalled all my codecs after I did the registry edit. Arg, I wouldn't have to go through this if the audio capture WORKED on iuVCR, because all of my codecs seem to be showing up in there.
