  1. Hello, I am a total newbie, so please excuse if these are really dumb questions. I've been reading over a lot of the stuff on this site and everything talks about changing the avi file to an mpeg, usually using the TMPGEnc program, and then burning that to VCD. Why do you need to do that? My boyfriend burned his avi straight to vcd the other day, he is using Nero. It seemed to play ok on my VCR (wouldn't work on his). Do you get better quality if you do that other step? How much of a difference is it? When exporting the timeline from Premiere for the avi, which is the best codec to use to get the best quality? Or would it be better to make it uncompressed, and can you then compress it when you make it the mpeg? What if you want highest quality for online viewing, plus high vcd quality? Will one way work for both, or would you need two different formats?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I think you are running before you can walk !. Learn the basics before moving on to more advanced topics, you cannot burn an AVI to a CD and expect it to play in a DVD player. Nero converts it to mpeg before it burns, and usually makes a right mess of it.

  3. I know that Nero does the encoding, that's why I asked what the difference is between having it encode or using the other program.

By the way how do you get them to play on your "VCR" I tried to put one in mine, but it wont fit

TMPGENc will make a better mpeg than Nero would.

  5. My DVD player! I was typing quick and it just slipped out. I told you I'm a newbie! :P

Ok, I will try out that program for making mpegs. What about the codec issue? We're having a real problem with figuring that out. If we're using Premiere and just want to make the mpeg for the vcd, would it be best to do that frameserver thing I was reading about? Or am I jumping ahead again? When we have a finished movie in Premiere, what is the BEST way to get it out so we can share it?

Well I see a lot of Newbie's come here, and quite a lot know more than the old timers, so was thinking you new something we didn't know. Shame about that, I was hoping you would tell me how to use my VCR for the disks.

As for the codec, download and install the "Nimo codec pack" V5 built 7, it has them all.

If you want to share your movies, you need to convert them to DivX that will shrink them down half the size.

Sorry cannot help with Premiere, only used it once, not impressed with it so took it off.

VCR -> DVD player i guess. his player may not support (S)VCD or CD-R/W, take a look here http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

Yes, Nero is crap for convering. From my experience the differens is quite nocicable. but in the end all comes down to source quality.

When exporting the timeline from Premiere for the avi, which is the best codec to use to get the best quality? Or would it be better to make it uncompressed, and can you then compress it when you make it the mpeg
If you take a look at my site i have a easy to follow guide there (link in sign), if you run into problem just mail me.

VCD is to large for online viewing, if you mean streaming. for DL its good, DIVX is smaller. for streaming i think you need something even smaller, like mov or so but i have no experience here so dont listem to me..

    hope it helps
Well, I am the slime from your video.
