  1. Just like to say...

    GREAT guide!!

    I just have some problems with adding subtitles.
    When i add them with the standard Y-offset of -1
    (wich should be original dvd position) all goes well.
    But when i want to move the subs to the black border
    below the movie (beacause i watch on 4x3 TV) it
    goes wrong.

    For example, i set the Y-offset to 500, wich brings the
    top line of the subtitles just below the movie. When i
    encode the movie, almost all subtitles are encoded,
    but some are not!! or at least not visible??

    I had a quick test, and think the subs are lost when
    there is only a bottom subtitle line.
    (so, only a top line, or 2 line's works fine)

    This is a bit irritating...

    So i now have to choose between
    1) subs in the movie
    2) subs below movie, but missing some lines

    does anybody also encounterd this problemm?
    does anybody know what is happening here?
    does anybody know how to fix the problemm?

    Thanx !!

    Martin.

  2. Baker,

    Dude.. Don't give in. Without you're previous efforts, there would be not be a bountiful discussion. I for one have enjoyed this guide. I LIKE the quality of the image that I see. I am just trying to decide on whether I should use TMPGEnc or CCE (for which I can obtain an illegal copy or sell a kidney to get it). I have tried tests with both and for what I have seen, at exactly the same settings, looked pretty much the same; except that CCE's file was about 9Mb smaller. Yes this was with just 2 pass VBR at min 1200 avg 2350 min avg 1600 and max 2520. Same audio file muxed in, so is irrelavant.

    Instead of MPEG-2, how about MPEG-1. A XVCD of sorts. Everyone wants it to LOOK good as well as be small... Let's all try his settings with MPEG-1 instead. I like CVD from what I saw for the rez. 352x480 is a compliant rez for DVD. I ran it through Spruce Up and it took it without complaining.. 480x480 was a differant story all together. No go.

    I will post my results if you like or I'll just email them to ya. Keep up the faith and good fight.

    Sod out...

  4. Under the misc tab, choose Advanced. If the resize option
    does not appear all is not lost.

    Under the framserving tab, choose edit when dvd2avi is done
    and past the following line in the dialog box (you will have
    to wait for initial decoding of the video source)

    For PAL users:

    BicubicResize(352,576,0.00,0.60)

    For NTSC users:

    BicubicResize(352,480,0.00,0.70)

    *NB although this guide says it supports CVD that is compatable
    with DVD, certain tweaks have been left out. Do a search on the
    net to suit your DVD authoring software to prevent complete re-encodes
    in the future.

    @SodGawd
    Thanks!!
    That X stuff you talked about is useless. cds at 352x57 (this guide) is as good as it gets.

    @mves

    Yhanks for the thanks but I know nothing about subs.

    Hey gawd I dont think there would be any point in making it Mpeg1,as it wouldn't look any better and it sounds like you think the filesize will be smaller which it wouldn't be.

    Baker 352x576 is not as good as it gets, CVD is as good as it gets if your Average Bitrate is under 1800kbps, i personally dont like CVD as its too blurry because of excess stretching, and if your viewing on a widescreen TV things get even worse.

    CVD is great if you have a low average bitrate, but SVCD and full DVD resolution if your DVD player supports it, gives better results if your Average bitrate is over 2000kbps.

    All this is if you prefer a sharper more detailed image, you might notice a few more blocks but i just finished encoding 13 ghosts with 720x576 min300 max4000 average 2320 5 pass VBR, and its nearly as good as the original, look the same on a 21inch TV, bit worse on a 28 Widescreen, but damn close.

    I understand not everyone can use such a high maximum, and 720x576 does take a lot longer to encode especially on 5 pass, but i just wanted to say i definetly dont think CVD is a good as it gets.

  7. oki, I think as SVCD format is going to be a standard like CVD....
    you can eiser encode your video in SVCD format .. and put it on DVDr...
    and like wildscreen format become a standard in Europe ... many DVD player can read (now) SVCD format .. to burn dvd ... see article in DVdr section.

    see you

    dimitri SVCD's resolution of 480x480/576 does not comply with the dvd standard. If you make a SVCD and then decide later to convert to dvd you either have to take the chance of it not being compatible on your player or you have to re-encode it. It would be silly to raise the resolution to 720x480/576 so the only logical thing to do would be to convert it to 352x480/576 anyway, which does comply with the dvd standard. That is the whole point of this thread, that the CVD and DVD standards are very similiar to each other so its possible to encode to a format that will probably work now (non-compliant CVD) and that will definitely work later (compliant DVD.) SVCD and CVD are already standards. Anything that will play SVCD will also play CVD.

    I just have one minor gripe with this thread's title, and it may have even been stated earlier but I missed it. It is contradictory to say a "dvd compliant cvd." If it is dvd compliant then it is not a CVD and will not be guaranteed to play on a SVCD compatible dvd player, whereas a compliant CVD would. This is what I meant when I said this guide creates a format that will probably work now (non-compliant CVD) and that will definitley work later (dvd.)

    Dvd2svcd does support CCE 2.6+ just select fake avi file. this slows the process down a lot but does the job well.

    in the advanced menu from cce chose dvd compliant and close al gops.
    but closing all gops makes picture quality not as good, as you chose no gops!!!
    Try if it work also without close all gops, when it works, you have better quality!!!

    in the advanced menu from bbmpeg, change stream type, from SVCD to mpeg2 !!!!! You know why?

    And also use a sharpen filter and a value of 0.4 for better details, near as a SVCD.

  18. Encoded CVD just a small box in middle of screen.

    I have similar problem that Mr. Fred Finkle earlier.

    The encoded CVD is just a small box in a middle of screen. The aspect ratio of the box is distorted (stretched vertically)

    I am using DVD2SVCD109b3 & CCE2.5

    The movie(s) i was making were Toy Story 1 & 2 (They are aspect ratio 16:9), and on Conversion tab I chose 16:9 w/borders added, encoded as 4:3

    Maybe something wrong with CCE advanced settings? Could you clarify these settings, or suggeset something else?

    Thanks in advance!

    yes dvd2svcd does support ALL versions of dvd2svcd. just takes a small settingsm tweak to create a fake avi file.

    @netso69
    The problem is that for somereason dvd2svcd is forgetiung to select the mpeg source. I reccomend sending the bug report to dvd2svcd then re-trying the rip.

    @Jaspa
    NOBODY SHOULD FOLLOW JASPAS ADVICE IF YOU DO YOUR CVD WON'T BE DVD COMPLIANT.

    @Pollliisi
    i KNOW WHAT YOU DID WRONG. yOU CHECKED DVD COMPLIANT IN THE cc SETTINGS. just relised caps was on . You should always follow my instructions and not make up your own.

  20. Thanks Baker for the reply..

    You were right, I checked too many boxes in CCD advanced settings. I will try again. But as for suggestion, The guide was not very clear on this: "Then go to advanced settings and make sure close all gops is checked. "

    For me example, this was the first time I read about "Gops" Oh well blah blah blah. Just add picture of the correct CCE advanced settings, for dumbasses like me...

  22. ok here's my question......

    is it normal that when a watch a cvd (create with this guide) that 1 or 2 time during the movie....the image freeze for a couple of second but not the sound.....and after everything comes back to normal.... it was worse when i was downloading cvd and svcd from filenexus (that's why i am trying to do it myself). it's a bit annoying and i just want to know if it is normal

    here's the tool and settings i used:

    nero to burn
    cce 4 pass avg bitrate(never under 2000)...min set to 700

    the cd-r i am using right now are memorex

    thanks
    so is it my cd-r..nero..or is it normal

    After burning SVCD's or cvd, they are sometimes "choppy", pausing for a moment, then continuing.

    Nothing seems to work. Does somebody have any suggestions, please??

  26. hi guys got a major problem with CCE.
    I followed baker's guide to the letter and everything works perfectly until DVD2SVCD starts CCE to begin encoding. CCE then crashes due to an error and a box comes up forcing CCE to close.
    Does anyone else have this problem?
    I used CCE version 2.5 but v2.64 also crashed. I have WinXP
