  1. Hi all,

for five days now i hv been trying to convert/edit a 700+mb avi file to svcd.

I read through vcdhelp a million times by now, i hv downloaded i dont know how many different programmes and i still cant fix my problem.

First i tried cutting the avi into two with tmpgenc. the result was that the picture comes out clear but there is no sound whatsoever. i then used virtual dub to extract the sound on its own from the avi and when i added it using again tmpenc, the sound was there but i was out of sync!

So now i am trying to use virtual dub to split the avi however, i only get about 15mins of sound, basically when the avi is split that is where the sound stops. the video is ok but the sound just vanishes when the splitting/conversion is ready. Any ideas?

Hi sounds like your going in the right places, but may be missing a few things.
1, Use Vdub to cut an AVI not TMPGEnc

2, When you extract the sound, don't just save it out, you need to select

    Audio > Full processing mode
    Audio > Conversion > 44.1Khz
    Save WAV

This saves a uncompressed WAV file ready for use.

3, Scan AVI for junk frames before you do anything.

  4. If you are making a VCD or SVCD.
Extract the audio as wav (as King John suggests),encode with TMPGE using WAV as audio source, then split the MPEG using TMPGE.(the audio/video sync seems to work better when you split as an MPEG as opposed to using V-dub with and AVI).

Another good suggestion was to use the "special" version of Virtualdub to do a Video Scan.....and if you find bad frames you can remove them.
Download this by scrolling down the 'vdub_mp3_freeze"

Well that depends on the AVI being fault free. If the AVI is OK, then you can split it, then you would need to extract the sound on each file, the total sound cannot be used in TMPGEnc if you have the AVI split into 2.

I find that by converting the whole movie in TMPGEnc then using split merge is the quickest method, mostly AVI's come in 2 downloads so I convert them separately with TMPGEnc and see how big they are, if the total size will fit on one CD, I will merge them. If I download a 750Mb AVI, I check it for bad frames, then convert the whole movie before splitting it.

Its not always necessary to save out the audio, if the bitrate is constant, and the AVI is error free there is no reason why TMPGEnc wont convert it without a problem. In fact the latest release will also handle some junk frames without the need to scan and remove them in Vdub.

Each AVI will present different problems, a quick scan in Vdub might indicate a problem, before you convert to mpeg1, it can also warn you of non standard bitrates, that can cause lip sync.

Scanning for junk frames in the latest Vdub is a problem, it can crash with the MMX not being switched off, Vdub web site know about this fault, and hopefully it will be fixed in the next release, meanwhile use "vdub-mp3-freeze.exe"
