DVDiT is re-encoding them and settiing them up with the *.VOB file format for the DVD to accept, it normally takes about 1 1/2 hours to do two movies including buringing.

Hi,
Been reading up on the CVD discussion and am very interested in trying it out, but I have a question.
How would one deal with backing up a 16x9 DVD to CVD standard and I am speaking only of the resolution conversion. When you resize a 16x9 DVD to SVCD resolution you must take it down to 480x360 and then add borders. I know this is dealing with the vertical resolution but I am unsure if this will still be necessary with a CVD or not.
Thanks for your help
MDK -
16X9 I suppose you mean the 16:9 ascpect...
It is the same thing for CVD as with SVCD.
Also, it is not neccessary to add borders. There are ways to make the output 16:9 with tmpgenc. I believe it is the same with CCE
In TMPGenc, set the "Video Arange Method" to "full screen (keep aspect ratio 2). That way the aspect gonna ramain as the source, if that helps you.
Also, I remind you: You have to master SVCD and then go for alternatives like CVD.
About interlace and progressive: My opinion is to keep that as the source. If the source is progressive, keep it that way. If it is interlace, keep it interlace also. There is no need for de-intelace with mpeg 2. -
SatStorm,
I posted this topic before, when I thought that DVCD was the same of CVD... well, it is not and my DVD player does not support it...
But what about if I create an XVCD, using 352x480 (not interlaced, using PICVideo MJPEG compressor, double field over 240 lines disabled), MPEG-1, 2,5Mbps ? will it give me the same quality as CVD?
Anyone knows?
Thanks,
Fredİ -
Hi,
Thanks for the info. I was refering to 16:9 aspect ratio. I currently have a 4:3 TV so I do all my SVCD's that way. If things are the same as SVCD, other than the 352X480 resolution then I am golden. I would not say that I have mastered SVCD, but I think I am getting pretty good at them so I will give CVD's a shot.
Thanks again

So here's an idea i had...
Say i have this DVD that i've ripped. This DVD is larger than 4.5GB, so it'll need to be split to 2 DVD-R's. That sucks.
Now - CVD produces DVD-compliant video streams. Would it be possible to use CVD to convert my video stream into a smaller (MUCH smaller) fiolesize, then replace the original video stream with the smaller CVD stream, and burn as a DVD-R?
I'm thinking like this - convert to CVD using the guide. Then, drop your streams into SpruceUp (or another DVD authoring program) and save the VIDEO_TS folder. This should write the streams as VOB files. Move the VOB files into the VIDEO_TS folder of your ripped DVD, and rename the VOBs to reflect the names of the original VOBs which contained the original video stream. Then make some changes with IfoEdit, and burn that sucker!
It'd be nice if this worked, as this process is a lot faster than transcoding the video stream with ReMPEG or TMPGEnc.
Has anyone tried this? I'm going to make an attempt this evening, and i'll post my results, but if anyone already has experience i'd like to hear about it. -
Hi all! Has anyone had any experience using TSCV with CVD mpeg2 files? I want to switch to the CVD format, can I use 48000 hz and burn to cd-r still? Any input on the subject would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi does anyone know how to change GOP limit in CCE? I would like to try to maximize it to 18 frames in a GOP (PAL)
-
CCE handles the GOP a bit more oddly, and the maximum length it allows is 15 (v2.5 anyway).
You'll find it under 'Encode settings...' when you click the 'GOP...' button. To get a GOP length of 15, the values should be 3 and 5. -
I have a DVD burner and was wondering when we say that CVD is near DVD quality would it still make sense to burn CVD to DVD? Am I sacrificing anything noticeable to get several clips onto 1 DVD.
also would 320x200, 300x240 etc look better on CVD then using true DVD encoding 720x480 or even DVD 352x480
I'm only assuming that taking low res clips to 740x480 looks worse than going to half DVD? What's the best approach?
Thanks in advance -
What calculator would you use to determine the average bitrate for a vbr encode? I usually use the vcdhelp calculator for my svcd's, would the same numbers apply to CVD? Just out of curiousity, what is usually the recommended minimum bitrate, 50, 75, 100?? Thanks people!

@brucer: Hi, welcome to the forum. My friend, don't use CVD. Master SVCD first and in about 6 months try CVD. Your questions need about a tone of analysis. CVD is an alternative for advanced users... Answers before the Questions ain't usefull...
@RiG: Any Typical SVCD calculator can be used for CVD. -
After reading all the posts in here I still have some questions. I capture from a minidv cam at 720 x 480 type 1 video avi file.
Using tmpeng what should the video source type be progressive or interlace.
what should my source aspect ratio be.
What should my system stream settings be.
ANY help would be appreciated. -

Well, a reason is that ALL of the programs out there are optimised for SVCD and not CVD. So, the correct way is to learn how to make SVCDs and then find ways to make CVD.
Once again I repeat that CVD is for advance SVCD users.
If you go straight for CVD and you don't have mastered SVCD, it is very easy to have problems of any kind during the proccess and blame the format itself than your low knowledge. So, it is very easy for people (expecially newbies) to start posting : CVD is a crap, non compatible etc.
By mastering SVCD you prevent "conclusions" like those.
And that's why I don't suggest newbies to mess up with the format and ready CVD solutions or CVD guides. For me the correct way is: Go for SVCD, learn ALL you have to learn and then try the advance alternative which is CVD. Is the only way to have safe conclussions yourself and resolve without help all your problems!
In the next update of my FAQ, I'will notify this: That CVD is only (and only) for Advanced SVCD users. -
SatStorm:
I have done 3 SVCD's with decent quality and yesterday I started to play with the CVD format. For some reason my DVD player will choke after playing the CVD for a few seconds (it will continue playing it but audio and video are skkipping). I'm encoding a scene taken in SeaWorld (Orlando, FL) and as you can imagine (if you are familiar with the place) they are a lot of people moving at the same time. I 'm unable to get this right using either SVCD or CVD formats. You mention that a guide for CVD's was not nessesary for the moment but it looks like some people (including you) are having excelent results playing with this format. I wanna have my CD's ready for a DVD-RW in the near future and this seems to be the way to go. Would you be kind enough to come up with a guide reflecting more details about the encoding procedure?.....I'm also having a hard time encoding a scene where I have a dolphin and...of course.... lots of water. The water always comes out "SUPER BLOCKY".....I'm not even compresing the original AVI file and still does it......any ideas?
thx......cubanazo -
@CUBANAZO
You probably use an NTSC standalone player non compatible with CVD, only SVCD. This is common for R1 DVD standalones. Almost the half of them, ain't capable to play CVD. I have post the reason varius times, also I have an update to my FAQ.
The same mpeg 2 file, burned on a DVD-/+R(W) disc, gonna play perfect in your Standalone. Silly isn't it?
For a guide, I'll see... First I have to finish some tests with the CVD templates I want to publish this month. Then, who knows.... -
Satstorm: Thank you for the informative article, and the additional informative posts it has sparked
You mentioned you'd post a guide if one was needed...well although I have been successful making CVDs, I'd still appreciate it very much if you'd make a guide based on your experiences

Sorry I just saw your guide
I'll give it a go and see how it looks, the guide is well written.

@Baker:
Your guide is very nice but in my case the source is home movies not a DVD.
Thx... -
Why don´t you use 720x576 / 480 SVCDs?!!??!
They are DVD ready and works in ALMOST ALL DVD players!
Don´t come with stuff like "the extended resolution "eats" video bitrate!"
I do LOTS of SVCDs at 720x576 with bitrates 1600 - 2500 Kbits /sec and the image is superb!!! Of course I use CCE with 4/5 passes but I don´t mind!
With my Athlon XP 1700@1800+ and 256Mb SDRAM I take about 8-10 hours to compress a entire 2 hour DV movie with 4/5 passes and with VERY GOOD quality, not to mention excelent resolution!!! No need to use filters like sharpen or stuff like that!. Very good results and DVD ready!
ALSO SOUND is ready! I make SVCDs 720x576, 48 KHz sound -> I tried in 7 different DVD players and all work with no flaws! Try it... 8) -
720 X 576 is standart only for DVD, NOT SVCD.
CVD's 352 X 576 is both standard for SVCD and DVD.
We use CVD because is compatible and fair in quality. It is not the best solution for quality, but is probably the best solution for compatibility!
Read again my faq, I explain everything.
Baker, this hobby is not only for DVD ripping. The source many times can be analogue grabbings, DVB rippings (direct stream grabbing, no analogue grabbing), DV, or stuff like ASF/DViX, XviD, etc. Your excellent guide is only for one thing: DVD ripping. But our hobby ain't only this thing you know!
I still not see a need for CVD guide. ANY SVCD guide in the net can easily be used for CVD to. Anyway, I'll think about it... -
Good news!
My DVD player does play CVD's....let me see if I can get this right.... :P
