  1. I have 2 600 MB files that i need to burn. They are in .avi format and havent' been formatted to .mpeg. I keep hearing people talk about fitting movies onto one disc, now each of these files will be substantially larger than one cd after formatting. Is there a way to author each of these files so that i will only need one cd for each, while remaining at nearly the same quality????? THis is gladiator in a dvd rip. Thanks. THe actual size is 580mb, and 594mb

  3. correction, you can fit up to a little under 800MB's on an 80 minute cd-r with no overburning. I think you'll be fine kid, just be sure to use the http://www.vcdhelp.com/calc.htm VCD calculator to find out the maximum bitrate possible for each movie and still be able to fit on one disc.

    Hey Bounty,

he said .AVI files so that means an ISO burn with a max
    of 700meg

  5. The file hasn't been authored yet. THerefore, i have no idea of the final size when run through virtualdub, and tmpgenc. The rephrased question is... is there a way when authoring to reduce the final size of the file prior to burning to get it to fit on a cd. Specifically, after authoring a 594mb file???

    oh god, read the guides!
The only thing limiting the amount of time a disc can hold is the bitrate. a standard VCD has a bitrate of 1150kbps, meaning it can fit 80 mins on an 80 min cd-r (see?)
now then, gladiator is, what 155 minutes or so? so to fit that all on one disc, you work out how many kilobits there are on an 80 minute cd (the answer is about 6512640) then you take your movie, 155 minutes is 9300 seconds. so divide the kilobits equally into each second (6512640/9300=700kbps) then subtract from this the audio bitrate you want to use (128 or 192 i expect) so 700-128=572kbps for video. but that'll look like shit, so you want to use 2 cd's. so 155 minutes divide by two is 77.5, and 77.5 minutes in seconds is 4650, so 6512640/4650-128= a video bitrate of 1272kbps. you can either use that as a cbr figure in tmpgencs setting-Video tab, or you can use 2-passVBR with a max of 2250, average of 1272 and minimum of 500.
    confused?
VCD's are harder to make than Divx's. Get over it.
