Srry if this is the wrong forum to ask this on.. but I believe I have seen questions regarding p2p and other applications like morpheus and kazza here before.
Anyways.. let me get to the point.
I got sick of the bad quality movies on file sharing programs a long time ago. So I went straight to the newsgroups.
Recently I haven't been getting good speeds with the newsgroups, and a friend of mine told me it was possible to connect to pubs or sumthing on irc and get movies.
I have mIRC and I use it on gamesnet.net to talk to my online gaming friends.
Can someone please explain how to use Irc to get movies? I know someone out there knows :P
thanks

I have mIRC and I use it on gamesnet.net to talk to my online gaming friends.
Can someone please explain how to use Irc to get movies? I know someone out there knows
Second, get on one of the networks. I recommend DALnet, although their American servers seem to be infrequent (I end up connecting through England, of all places).
Third, get a list of the channels available on DALnet. Since I don't have the program open in front of me, this is only an approximation - open up the icon that specifies the list for the channel, and get it (it's long, and has about 40,000 channels, so it'll take a little time).
Fourth, filter the list with the words that will show up. AVI, video, movies, are all good guesses.
Fifth, get on a channel that's listed.
Now, you'll have to watch for the "ads" that come on the channel. Sometimes you can type !list and get the ads of all servers on the channel to appear. Sometimes they just show up on a regular basis.
There are three ways people offer files on IRC.
FTP - The people have an FTP server up. Their ad lists the address, channel number, user name and password to get into the site. With these guys, you have to open up your FTP client to get the files. (I use WS-FTP myself - it's a pretty good free client). You will usually have to stay on the IRC channel at the same time as you download from FTP.
FILE LIST - Some people have lists that you can download, of the files they have on their servers. You download the file by sending a request. Quite often, it's their user name preceeded by an ampersand. For example, for a server like -OLDMAN- you would get his list by typing in the main channel window:
@-OLDMAN- (return)
Eventually, the list will download to your mIRC folder (usually the DOWNLOAD one). You can browse the list for the files in your word processor or in Wordpad with Windows. Most often, it's in a format like this:
!-OLDMAN-Spike Jones - Cocktails for Two.mp3 3.2mb
You copy everything from the exclamation point to the end of the file name (don't include the file size on the list). Highlight it and type ctrl-C. Then switch back to the mIRC window for the channel and paste it (ctrl-V) and hit return. For the example above, you'd paste:
!-OLDMAN-Spike Jones - Cocktails for Two.mp3
Then hit RETURN.
If the server isn't full, you'll get placed in a queue (waiting line, in case you have never been to Disney World and never heard that word). You'll have to stay in the channel to get the download, while waiting for other people to get theirs.
Now, the third method. FILE SERVERS.
People running file servers have, in their ads, "triggers" to initiate contact. . For example, -OLDMAN- might have a line like this in his ad:
-OLDMAN- Great movies! Triggers===/ctcp -OLDMAN- Smallville=== /ctcp -OLDMAN- Buffy====
or something like that. You copy and paste the trigger and send it. In the IRC window, you "copy" simly by highlighting. Then you go to the send line, hit ctrl-V to paste, and hit return. To use the example above, you simply highlight this much of the line:
/ctcp -OLDMAN - Smallville
then go to the send line, ctrl-V and hit Return.
Then, the person will open up a DCC request to you. A window will pop up asking if it's okay to talk to the person. Click on ACCEPT, and a window will open up with the file listings.
For this step, you have to know a little about the old DOS (or UNIX, actually) commands for browising directories. Here's the process I usually go through...but learn the commands, okay?
Once he goes through the copyright warning, you'll get a prompt like:
-OLDMAN-:
First, get the directory by typing DIR (return)
You'll get a directory like...
-OLDMAN- FIRST SEASON
-OLDMAN- SECOND SEASON
-OLDMAN- THIRD SEASON
Go to the subdirectory FIRST SEASON by typing:
cd FIRST SEASON (return)
The line will show you're on a subdirectory:
-OLDMAN- /FIRST SEASON
Type DIR (return) to get the files in the subdirectory...and you get something like...
-OLDMAN /FIRST SEASON
-OLDMAN Episode 1.mpg
-OLDMAN- Episode 2.mpg
(and so on)
To get the file, you type this:
GET Episode 1.mpg (return)
This will get you into the queue to get files. For very small files they may send it instantly, but MPG files aren't small, are they?
If you want to go up out of the subdirectory to the directory level above, you type:
cd.. (return) (that's two periods)
To close out the session, you type BYE(return) or EXIT (return), and the server will sign you off - or it will do so in 30 seconds if you don't type anything...and then you close that window.
IMPORTANT STUFF:
On DALnet, they are worried about viruses. When you get on, you might want to ask people about a little thing called registering your nickname. You can probably read about it on their web site, http://www.dal.net and get your name registered. Some sites like #SCIFI won't let anybody in unless their nick is registered: and their site has the best damn downloads of all.
Second, you may have to manualy allow people to send to you, especially on DALnet. You have to type /dccallow + ChampagneCharlie to put ChampagneCharlie on your list to receive files. This keeps someone from sending you virus files against your will. There's a way to do this semi-automatically...but I forget what it is. ASk around.
Third, be prepared to wait a while. On some channels, like MP3AUDIOBOOKS, for instance, they run trivia contests.
Fourth, read everything you can about IRC. It's a neat place. It's wilder than the Web. It's full of all kinds of stuff you can't get anywhere else. But that means it's dangerous, too. Check EVERYTHING for viruses. I set my virus checker to automatically check anything sent to me.
Hope this helps...'cause I wasn't expecting to type this long.Animation and geeky reviews and podcasts at

No disrespect.tomreedtoon, but I got lost after the second paragraph...lol!
Just use Kazaa...in conjunction with Morpheusx...be patient ...leave it running and you'd be surprised.
I have over 200 full length movies using Kazaalite...some end up as fast as 60 or 70kb/s ...while some are slower....so the slow ones I just resume every day.Eventually I get it after a few days...patience is a must!"Today is only yesterdays tomorrow" -
Tom Reed:
that was an excellent post about how to get quality video off of IRC. I too am tired of Kazaa's fake files and waiting forever to get movies that have been available on the net forever! by looking at the text at the bottem of the screens (TMD, IRC.DALnet movies) I can see that by going through IRC I am probobly getting my stuff straight from the source. Plus, I like to know all of my options. so I will definatley print your post and get back on mIRC with determination this time!
Peace,

I've said this many times before but seeing this is a newbie section most probably havent heard it. Here are the advantages IRC has over p2p:
1) Fast speeds if you know the places: 200k+ on irc / 60-120k on Kazaa(if that)
2)Better quality files: IRC gets all the new releases usually a week or two before the same but shittier copies show up on p2p. IRC gets them from the people who did the copy not some group re-encoding it.
Those are the two main ones but there are more. Good post by Tom Reed about how to use it but if you want to find the best channels check out this place http://irc.netsplit.de/channels/search.php to find the stuff you are after. -

Its a little tool that constantly scans your resumed files and checks for more sources for download(the catual new version of Morpheus is crappy).
I also went on to say that I downloaded 200 plus movies from KazaaLITE which of course is spyware free."Today is only yesterdays tomorrow" -
Tomreedtoon, Thanks for the very informative post. It has helped allot. Thanks also to the other people that replied.
I am on a company broadband so speed is not an issue.
I will now be using irc and hopefully getting some nice quality svcds.
Thanks again,

kazaa??? kazaalite??? such crap
I use newsgroups and edonkey. both give me the high ass quality files I am looking for, no matter what it is, full albums, HQ movies(svcd), software and games (none of that ripped shit, bin/cue or iso only)
kazaa = virus infested crap. -
Bullshit !....
over 200movies and counting ....vast majority pefect.
can you say...Virus Scan?"Today is only yesterdays tomorrow" -
Kazza sucks b/c yes you can get movies but what kind of movies are they? Are the the 50 mb crap files or low quality avi files? I only download good quality movies in multiple parts and then rar them together.
Get on the newsgroups. Or now irc. -
mmmm...duh..!!!
If its in the 150-250mb range its obviously a cam job.
If the Divx is in the 650-750mb range then its most likely a dvd rip divx.
Whats so hard about that.
Why would you d\l it in parts then join it together?
Sure Kazaa has some crap...but use some common sense when you search."Today is only yesterdays tomorrow" -
Kazaa Lite RULES dudes!!
I have gotten LOTS of Excellent Quality Movies off Kazaa, I have Cable & just simply look for the LARGEST file copies of movies. This ain't rocket science dudes, it Part 1 of a Movies is like a 650 MB .Avi, then that's a high quality DVD-Rip & that's what you want, if the same movie is like 250 MB, yea well that's a S**t Cam job & ain't worth messing with!
You can take the IRC & stick it, who want's to mess with it & have to "RAR" together like 30 pieces to make a movie. I get on Kazaa Lite & start downloading RIGHT AWAY!
-Mick- -
I don't seem to find as many high quality svcds on kazza that are brand new screeners straight from the acadamy students like I do from the newsgroups... I don't think you could get episode 2 of star wars 2 days before it came out on kazza...
file sharing suxors -
In time and if you prove trust worthy and make friends you can gain access to private irc networks... and 0day dumps, pubs...
Life is good!
Welcome and remember FREE is a good thing!!!

I got a screener of Harry Potter 2 days after it came out in theatres.I also got the screener of Lord of the Rings after a week of being released...and others. If you don't believe me...just type in screener in the search and you'll see.
Took about 7 hours to d\l HP and LOTR ,but i got them and they look great.
You won't find too many MPEG's on Kazaa (due to the large file size....1.5 to 2 gigs for full movie or 1/2'd in two). But the Divx rips are in most cases fabulous and I don't understand why people keep knocking it.
Sure it has its faults....but what exactly do you expect for free!!!"Today is only yesterdays tomorrow" -
I guess ur right about divx files but I perfer mpeg2 files for my svcd collection. Newsgroups will however get you screeners before the movie is released in theatres.
I might start a divx collection now that I found out it is possible to play them back on sega dreamcast and playstation2. -

Kazaa has spy-ware etc! DL Ad-aware and take a look at what it finds. Morpheus does not have spy-ware. Newest Morpheus version 1.9 is not to bad.
good luck

If you look at the earlier posts you would see that I use Kazaa with the clint_dl removed....no spyware.
The newer Morpheus is totally useless since it changed it appearance and uses the Gnutella format."Today is only yesterdays tomorrow" -
I used Morpheous through Virtual PC for the longest time, but the most recent release sucked big time! I've since deleted the VPC section all together and use only Iricle, which is a Mac MIRC client. I've found MIRC to be great and would suggest it to anyone looking for movies and PC apps. Mac apps are a little harder to come by.
-
I know that sega is trying to stop cdrs but all you have to do is get an older version of the dreamcast that supports it. I also heard that some dvd players are like the dreamcast where you can install third party software.

First of All - Forget Mpeg2 SVCD! Those files are WAY too big - Just use Mpeg1 & burn into a Standard VCD format, you can fit one movie on 2-CD-R's or even 1 CDR if you use Kwag's templates.
Get yourself a Large Movie File like 700 MB .Avi & you're Gauranteed High Quality!! Just convert it using TMPEnc & burn it in VCD format, it'll look fine!!! (Note - Many Players don't do SVCD's anyway, mine don't)
Second of all - I'm have been ion a Cue for an hour now on Winmx, trying to download one stupid movie, I 'm getting rid of WinMX today.
So far Kazaa is my Preference fo ease of use. I may try Imesh & Mirc but the Newsgroups sound like a real pain-In-The Ass.

Props to you pacmania_2001. I've been wondering what that site was called, cause I fergot it. Thanks a bunch. Now Im back in the game.
http://irc.netsplit.de/channels/ <<<Gooooooooood place to find channels! -
haha
You can easily tell the people who have been using the internet for a while (and probably find the things they want) when you see a post like this!
"I use XXX and its great, dont use anything else" - LOL
Be a little more open minded - have you people who like P2P programs ever used IRC?
And yes, I know what merits each type of program has - p2p programs (audiogalaxy/morpheus/kazaa etc.) are good for music and smaller files, but IRC/Newsgroups usually come out on top for movies etc.... Im not saying everyone should use IRC cause a lot of people cant and dont want to learn. Plus if i get everyone downloading through IRC it's gonna slow my downloads.
Also, here's some food for thought.
The groups who release the stuff (talking about ISO releases here) in the first place use BIN/CUE files compressed with RAR into 15 or 20 MB chunks (depending on what type of release it is) so saying that its silly to download that type of release is saying that their ideas are silly, and where would you all be without them?? -
I'm the founder of one of the biggest episode channels on dalnet (about 160 people during the season) and I can definitely say IRC is the best place to get episodes/movies. The only catch is you need things to trade and a fast connection. Another good server, considered "the underground" is irc.zyclonicz.net All they do there is movies/tv episodes. On dalnet check out #divx.edu. #jhu and #shadowy-corners were two of the best places to get movies from servers (no trades) but they both got shut down by the MPAA. Bastards!@

I am quite new to filesharing, conversion and the whole bit. I have experience with kazaa (lite) because it is so easy and thats what I heard about first. But I personally think that it is too popular (right word?). MOst of the good stuff takes weeks to come out and then half the time you get screwed and spend your time downloading bullshit or a bogus named file. That is exactly why I said that TomReeds post was excellent. And thanks to the others that have added usefull information about beiung successfull on IRC. I think that if your time is valuable enough and you want the best quality stuff, you will take the time to learn the ropes. And I believe it is true that the movies that some of us get (finally) on Kazaa and others like it are getting the re-encoded shitty versions of the movies that appear first on IRC - at the source. Screw the dumb shit, I am going for the top notch material. Once again thanks to all of you that have offerred advice to those of us that are trying to learn to use IRC.
Thanks,

If I can clear the air a bit...I've used file sharing programs. They have the advantage that, with many people contributing, you have a great chance to find unusual things. Yeah, everybody wants the latest hot album or movie, but how about the things for minority taste? Or older stuff?
The disadvantages outweigh them. How long before MPAA and RIAA shut down Kazaa and the other file sharing networks? They require central servers, and that "llama" program is slow and near impossible to navigate. Meanwhile, IRC is semi-anonymous and is very difficult for greedy corporations and corrupt governments to deal with.
I have had many people drop me out of Napster, Music City and other file sharing downloads because I'm not rich and can't afford DSL or cable modems. They simply refuse to acknowledge my request - or, so to speak, my existence. File sharers on IRC will let me know immediately if I'm too slow, and let me know how long a queue I have ahead of me.
There is also a sense of community about IRC. It is the first chat system, after all. Some channels have things like trivia games, with the monthly prize winner being "voiced" (and someday I'll find out what that means). There is literally a world of things out there - I haven't ventured beyond the English-speaking channels yet.
Finally - and this will anger the kiddies - IRC requires some intelligence and responsibility to operate. You have to do things technically right, and you can't act like a jerk or you will be banned. (All the users on my ISP were kicked off some networks a year ago, because the ISP was reluctant to find and discipline some infantile virus spreader. We were allowed back when the ISP did its job.) Even sending out a pile of text to someone (called "flooding") can get you kicked off because that's a hacker technique. In other words, you can't act like a jerk on IRC for very long. The opposite seems to be true on the file sharing networks.
Now, can someone recommend a REAL set of instructions from an IRC expert? I wanted to help the original poster, but I'm just a regular user. Someone must have similar instructions written clearly and concisely on a web page somewhere. Kindly help.Animation and geeky reviews and podcasts at

Nothing beats the Irc!(just find the right network and channels)
You download the 3cd SVCD of Spiderman? The 2cd SVCD of Scooby Doo or the 4cd SVCD of LOTR.... One Group that releases these movies is Centropy need I say more?
Then after the movie is released to DVD or VHS you can make a DivX of it using Nandub or Fairuse. Are you can wait and download one made by one of the groups. Nothing is better than watching a 1cd DivX using TV-out and having your friends are family ask if thats the DVD LOL!
You find a channel that has 0day dumps and contacts with the groups releasing the stuff you better hang around and make friends and prove your trust and learn how to run a FTP, life will be good for you if you do!
