you can still create "widescreen" VCD's by ading black bars at the top and bottom. True the video will actually be 4:3 but it will look as if it still in widescreen.

Not possable with VCD's, you have to use TV control

  5. I have an APEX 703 and I was able to get my Sony WEGA to compress to widescreen but the result was kinda sketchy. I would have to first play a real 16:9 DVD and right after play my "widescreen" SVCD. This would work but if I leave the player alone for a while and then play my SVCD I would get a 4:3 picture!!?!! Anywayz if you're interested in trying this just use TMPGenc and set output aspect ratio to 16:9. Good luck

  6. Oh by the way, I kept getting annoyed by this sketchy behavior so I just now use SVCDs where the output aspect ratio(AR) is 4:3 and source aspect ratio is 16:9 to get the black bars at the top and bottom. By the way, I once encoded a bunch of clips at differing output AR and source AR and if you can manually set the TV to go to widescreen then you can either use an output of 16:9 and source of 4:3 or output of 2.11:1 and source of 2.11:1

Everyone says this isn't possible. I can't guarantee this will work, as I have my DVD connected by S-Video and as such don't get auto switching at all, BUT....

I managed to get the DVD player to detect an anamorphic SVCD I made. What I mean by this is that when I put the display options in the DVD menu to 4:3 letterbox instead of 16:9, it automatically compressed the picture down. Now what I'm not sure of is whether the DVD player uses the same criteria to know when to adjust the image as the TV uses.

I used TMPGenc with 16:9 options selected wherever they were available, and then burned with Nero.

  8. how do you go about takinga video thats is encoded with the letterbox black bars and making it signal 16:9

or what method to reencode/resize to make the video the correct size on widescreen tv(esp need help with resolutions + AR). I got a widescreen tv and its stupid to see these letterboxed video squeezed even smaller on the widescreen tube. When all they need to do is be stretched and encoded to the right AR.

    thanx 4 the help.

IMHO, if your video isn't anamorphic, then I would just encode it as it is and use the zoom on your TV. It's a lot of hassle to resize the video to make it anamorphic.
