  1. DMA allows the computer to control the drive more effectively. Older optical drives didn't have this (hence the basic input outpu PIO mode), and for some reason this won't work with DMA enable. The 'features' on the leaflet with the drive says it does allow DMA as well as PIO Mode 4, and I could burn a data dvd-rw with DMA enabled, but had to disable it to get it to work.

I've got another post on here where someone's replied with a link to a pdf doc that Pioneer released explaining about it and how to get around it.

yea i figured it out or at least got it to work. in smartripper where you go to stream processing . i was unchecking all the boxes except audio and video. instead i left them all checked and just demux the audio and video and the whole movie was recorded. another problem now in spruce up . when i go to export and write is where i had the problem with the full movie. i left the write source to my dvd writer pioneer 104. and when i burned with nero the movie wouldn't play in my dvd player. i am gonna try again using disc image and see what that do . any other suggestions?

  3. Apparently Spruce Up isn't very good at writing straight to disk.

You can either to an image (if the aspect ratio doesn't need correcting) or create a title set, then use Prassi (this worked for me) or Nero (haven't tried it yet since I got my drive working, as Prassi worked).

Pretty straight forward, but takes a little longer obviously as the image file/title set has to be created, but it is worth it if it works!

  4. Well, I'm pretty new at authoring dvd's too, but am I missing something here?

Here's what I've been doing. First, if the movie is over 4.3 gigs, I just bite the bullet and re-encode with TMPGEnc, author/burn with Ulead DVDMF. Simple enough.

If the movie is under 4.3 gigs, I just use smartripper to rip the WHOLE dvd. I do this by using the "file" menu and making sure all files are selected. After ripping, I open Nero, DVD Video, drag and drop the ripped files into the VIDEO_TS folder, and burn. That gives me a 1:1 copy pretty easily?

Is there some reason not to do this and to go through demuxing/muxing and all kinds of other hoopla? If there is, help this noob out!

ok gotcha will try your way because i am making a lot of coasters. . as for as grayhair just follow along you will get there i did.

  6. Well, compared to making coasters I'm there. What I'm saying is that the method I'm describing has worked beautifully without any coasters. Can anyone see any reason that these methods are a poor alternative?

  7. Greyhair, for a movie under 4.3 do you rip the actual files then, or select to demux to an extra file (this gives you one .ac3 & one .m2v file, which you then autor in Spruce Up)?

If so, how do you create the menu? When you run the movie, do it start like the original, but not let you select any of the extras?

  8. I do a straight rip. No demuxing/remuxing/ifoediting....nothing. After all the files are ripped, I open Nero and burn the ripped dvd files as is. The movie starts just like the original dvd, chapters, menus, subtitles, the whole smear. So far, I'm not seeing any reason that this isn't a way to make a 1:1 copy on <4.3 gig movies.

  9. Do you only do that if the whole dvd is <4.3 then?

What if the dvd is say 7gb, but the movie under 4?

  10. Well, then you either just re-encode the movie itself, or you dig out ifoedit and start having fun. When that happens, I personally just re-encode (using sefy's ripping guide, but with dvd settings in tmpgenc) for now. I'm trying to figure out ifoedit, but so far it's just too much trouble for what it's worth (imo).

  11. ok on dvds that are less then 4.3gb cant you use new DVD Decrypter to rip to .iso.. then just use prassi or recordmax and burn the iso?

i still having trouble w/this one dvd im trying to put on dvd-r that is dual layer.. but the main movie is <4.3gb.. its vampire hunter d bloodlust.. and so far i've made 1 coaster.. and tried making the directory on HD and test it.. and still messed up.. no sound the last time.. any help greatly appreciated..

  12. you can rip the main movie if it's 4.3gb, but you only get the movie play back and not menus unless you rip everything relateded to the vob set. On dual layers I have seen the main movie come in at 4.3 but the total disc is like 6 to 8 gb due to deleted scence, the making of the mover, ect.. in there own vob sets, but I rip only the main movie.

thats what i am trying to do.. i ripped the main parts of the movie selected by both smart ripper and dvd decrypter and i cant seen to edit the ifo file to get rid of the unnecessary menus and linking to other stuff.. i just cant seem to get infoedit to work for me.. and when i try to test the dvd inside infoedit it gives me some error and then doesnt play anything.. same with vobrator..

    i need help..

  15. Are you not authoring before amending the IFO? Authoring allows you to import just the movie & audio, and create your own menu...

  16. i take it in ifoedit you rip out extras and have it rebuild new VOB in another directory where it should build new vobs as well as a new ifo file, the last step if i recall is to get new vts sectors from your news set of vobs. so there is no need to reauthoer if you have done your job in ifoedit ( i also take it you hve followed the guides at doom9.org ? )
