i downloaded some mpegs from their thumbnails on a website. they play fine on windows media player, but i cannot
de-multiplex them or import them into adobe premeir 6 or any other video editing program for that matter. i get an error when
de-multiplexing that says "illegal mpeg video stream". help!

They are not really mpeg files!...
Try to open them in VirtualDub.
or
Try renaming thefiles to anything.avi and then try looking at the properties for the file by right-clicking and choosing properties/details
I've got some movies that people just remaned to .mpg and they're mpeg4 divX files...Big_Jit
