Hi all.
I just purchased a Pioneer DV-444 and really dig it. It will play any DVD or burned CD I can throw at it. I do have one question though..
People have said that they have gotten burned SVCDs to play on their DV-444. While I can burn a VCD and get it working with no probs, the player has issues with SVCDs. It will play them, but in black & white, way towards the bottom of the sreen (cutting at least half of the picture out, and a really blinding refresh rate.
I have seen people get these to work on the DV-444 (even though technically the player is not supposed to play them).
I have been burning the discs with Nero 5.5.8.2, using the SVCD mode. I can re-encode the mpegs that I am making into SVCDs into VCDs and they will play, but with much less quality (both video and audio).
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!![]()

Exactly how are you making the svcds? Because I have made several svcds, both ntsc and pal and they work great on my dv-444.

Ok...
I extract an MPEG from the bin file of an SVCD (I don't usually keep these bins and cues after I exratc them). I then open up Nero and burn it as an SVCD (because it's an MPEG-2). It burns fine and plays fine on my DVD-ROM drive on my computer, but acts all screwy on my dv-444. -
I'm having the same problem but with many standalone dvd players. The svcd's play fine on my 80 dollar apex but on a 300 dollar sony they wont play. You said that you converted it to a Vcd from the Svcd with quality loss. How did you do that, what programs. I cant seem to do anything to them. I did what the main screens thing about Tmpenc and Using the mpeg tools to make a vcd, but that doesn't work. I still get digital blurs all over the screen, blotches of color etc... Any suggestions would be great.

madfx - Use Nero. I start by making a VCD. Add the MPEG from the SVCD you have (I use IsoBuster to do this), and then add it to your VCD that you are making. Nero will analyze the file and determine it is not suitable for SVCD. It will give you some options, one of which is to "re-encode the file". Select that one and then burn the VCD. It will need to re-encode the MPEG to meet MPEG1 standards, so plan on it taking some time (usually takes about 90 minutes to re-encode a 700MB file on my P3 733 Mhz Penitum.
After that, it will play on my player, with some minor studders and a small loss of quality, but hey it's better than nothing for now!
Let me know if this helps
