  1. Trying to back up a PAL DVD (original DVD is in 2.35:1 ratio) using Smartripper/DVD2AVI/TMPGEnc - this method has worked fine for me with a 16:9 original DVD before. I want to play the back-up on a widescreen TV.

When I open up the .D2V file in TMPGEnc, what should I be using as the video source setting on the "Advanced TAB"(which only seems to go up to 2.11:1 aspect ratio - or am I barking up the wrong tree here). I've tried all the settings (with "full screen keep aspect ratio"), but none of them seems perfect. If I use 19:9 625 line PAL as the source setting with "full screen keep aspect ratio" as the output setting, it seems about the best I can get, although the back-up still looks a little narrower vertically (i.e. thicker black lines top/bottom) than the DVD. Any ideas please ? Thanks.

  2. I just ripped the fast and the furious and it had the same ratio - hers what ya do:

Just go to Settings in TMPGEnc> Then goto the advanced tap and change the video arranged setting to custom and then the pixel size will appear. Keep the 352 (for VCD) and change the 240 to 190 and it should be perfect. If you have trouble write back...

Thanks a lot - didn't know I could do that. One question, looks like your calculation was for an NSTC DVD - mine is PAL, so I think maybe the number would be different. GRateful if you could explain the logic behind converting the numbers so I can try and apply it to the PAL profile (i.e. 352*288 instead of 352*240).

    Thanks

you say its for playback on a widescreen set? simple then, if its an anamorphic DVD (most are these days) then the input aspect ratio in the advanced tab is "16:9 625 line PAL" and in the video tab the aspect ratio is "16:9 625 line PAL" and this will give you an anamorphic VCD. it won't look right on your PC, but will be perfect on your widescreen set.
