  1. I have found this story from www.mundodvd.com, a DVD website in spanish. The link is http://www.mundodvd.com/html_noticias/noticia_04.html.

Basically it says Sanyo will present his recorder in japan at summer. It will burn DVD-R at 4x, DVD-RW at 2x , CD-R at 24x and CD-RW at 12x.

Also it will burn CD-R at higher capacity, HCD-R Technology ( 12x) - 1.3 GB. From what i read this format use current CD-R, use a non compatible burning technology , that makes perfect to backup Hard disks, but a non solution to sharing info (They won't work on other CD units).

    Also it support Burn-proof technology.

Looks really good, but unfortunately it has no price and no US or Europe timeline (Also i don't know at what time is summer in japan).

Anyone else know something else about this wonder?.

There have been a lot of discussions on 4x Sanyo and 4x Pioneer drives. CDRinfo.com reported on CRD-DV1 displayed at CeBIT 2002 three months ago.

I visit several Japanese and Korean sites several times each day. So far, there is no further news on it. However, Ritek announced it's already ready to ship 4x DVD-R discs at Computex Taipei and here's the full press release on June 14.

RITEK Takes Leading Position in DVD Manufacturing Technology
A Full Range of DVD Products Presented in Computex Taipei 2002

    Jun 14, 2002

Actively engaged in manufacturing, R&D and promotion of DVDs, RITEK is now the world's largest manufacturer of optical storage media. RITEK's DVD-R is the first that passed the accreditation by DVD Forum A-Class Lab. In addition, RITEK has successfully manufactured DVD-R 4x with the latest DVD manufacturing technology. With this innovative technology, RITEK is ahead of other DVD makers and takes the leading position in manufacturing high speed DVDs. DVD-R 4x produced by RITEK is much more superior to those by others in quality and stability. DVD made with this technology has become available for the market needs since June 1. Japanese Pioneer and Panasonic have also launched DVD-R 4x drives successively.

Besides having passed the accreditation by Japan A-Class Lab, RITEK's DVD-RAM makes RITEK the only Taiwanese manufacturer who can support CPRM (Copy Protection Recordable Media) Code. CPRM Code imposes different levels of limitation on recording for digital signals by global mass media. It is possible to record digital programs only with DVD-RAM that support CPRM Code. In addition to AV recording, it is also possible to store computer data with the same DVD-RAM and to repeatedly record up to 100,000 times. With the capacity up to 9.4GB, DVD-RAM is a very convenient new generation storage media.

In Computex Taipei 2002, RITEK will strongly promote DVD-RAM and co-exhibit the application of DVD-RAM to various hardware equipment with Panasonic, such as DVD-RAM Recorder, DVD-RAM Burner, DVD-RAM Desktop and Notebook etc. RITEK is not only one of the members of Promotion Committee under Recordable DVD Council (RDVDC), but has recently been elected as the deputy chairman of RDVDC. It is predicted that RITEK will have outstanding performance under the significant growth in the Recordable DVD marketplace in 2002.

For other Recordable DVD, RITEK has also produced DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW. Now the 2.4x version of DVD+R/+RW is launched to provide consumers with a speedier and more convenient option.

In the exhibition, RITEK will introduce the latest versions of CD-R and CD-RW and pioneer in launching CD-Rs 48X, CD-RWs 16X and CD-RWs 24X. RITEK has begun a mass production of CD-R 48X and CD-RW 16X and is superior to others in quality and stability. Both have been delivered to the marketplace and passed the accreditation in lab testing. RITEK has successfully developed and produced CD-RW 24X, which will be immediately available for market needs after the launch of CD-RW 24x drives. RITEK will also present a variety of Flash Memory Cards, Optoelectronic and photonics products, MD, MO and Jewel cases.

Sanyo enters the DVD format with CRD-DV1
    Wednesday, 29 May 2002

Sanyo Japan plans to release this summer a new super combo drive with the codename "CRD-DV1". The drive will support both CD and DVD formats, becoming an alternative solution to existing DVD writers. In addition would offer the faster DVD recording speed (4x) among with a new technology that adds 650MB to normal CD-R media reaching 1.3GB with 650MB and 1.4GB with 700MB discs!
    -Product Specs-

    - CD Format
    Writing speeds: 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 20x (CLV), 24x (Zone-CLV) [CD], 12x (CLV) [1.3GB]
    Re-writing Speeds: 4x, 10x, 12x (CLV)
    Reading speed: 40x (CAV)
    4MB Buffer
    Burn-Proof technology
    FlexSS-BP technology
    Shock-BP technology
    Safe-BP technology

Now you can fit 1.3GB by using special writers and media, according to Sony's DDCD format. Sanyo's proposal uses new technique that can fit 1.3GB in normal CD-R/RW media (650/700MB). This way you store more data without changing media and drive's design. Current readers wouldn't be able to recognize Sanyo's 1.3GB format without a firmware upgrade, but Sanyo says its would easy to accomplish. There is no information if this technology would be available to other manufacturers for implementation in their drive designs. More information will be published from Sanyo in the near future...Stay tuned!

    - DVD Format
    Writing speeds: 1x, 2x, 4x (DVD-R)
    Re-writing speeds: 1x, 2x (DVD-RW)
    Reading: 16x (CAV)

The CRD-DV1 supports the faster DVD recording speed of 4x (CLV). The DVD-R competition from other manufacturers is expected to reach 4x later this year and also DVD+RW format will shift speeds to catch up the new DVD recording race. The drive will have also higher DVD re-writing speeds (2x CLV) and 16x (CAV) reading DVD-ROM speeds. You can expect buffer underrun protection also for DVD format similar to BURN-Proof. Last till now, no media manufacturer has announced 4x DVD-R media, but rumours say that Mitsui would be the first manufacturer to support such high recording speeds...

Sanyo is also expected to introduce 48/24/48 CD-MRW and DVD+MRW drives.

  4. Hey Kennyshin, thanks for your reply.

I see a couple of your links and all link to dvdplusrw, and they are a "bit" biased toward DVD+R/RW.

I don't want to enter in a format discution, mainly because i live outside US and europe and here the only media avalaible is DVD-r/rw. So i need a DVD-R/RW drive. The thing is that this summer an uncle goes to US, so i can order a drive from internet and get it shipped to his hotel (have done this before). This way i get a good price (internet price) and i don't have to pay the 30% tax.

So, anyone knows when this drives(any DVD-R/RW) will be avalaible on the US and at what price?.

Update:: Found this on the net, a desktop DVD recorder , DVD-R/RW teamed with a HD recorder. Really cool (Buffy / Friends /Star Trek /Simpsons... without comercials in DVD !!!!)

    Toshiba Releases New RD-X2 DVD-R/-RAM+HDD Recorder - 6/18/2002
Zoran Corporation reported Toshiba's new DVD-R/-RAM+HDD recorder, which is powered by Zoran's Vaddis DVD solution, is now shipping. Toshiba's new RD-X2 recorder allows consumers to record one, two, four, or six hours of content on a single DVD-R/-RAM disc. The recorder can create DVD-Video format on DVD-R media, as well as DVD-VR format on DVD-RAM media. Data files stored in DVD-Video format can be played back on most DVD players on the market.

In addition to enabling cut, assemble, and edit capabilities, the RD-X2 recorder provides reliable authoring to a DVD disc. The 80-gigabyte hard disc drive delivers personal video recording (PVR) time-shifting capabilities that allow consumers to time shift live television programs as well as record programs like traditional VCRs.

"By selecting the Vaddis DVD solution for the RD-X2 recorder, Toshiba underscores the importance of offering robust, high performance audio video playback in its new recording products," said Camillo Martino, executive vice president and chief operations officer at Zoran Corporation. DVD-RW supporters in DVDplusRW.org forum are biased toward DVD+R/RW? That sounds ugly.

  9. From my observations there is a significant lag between Japan and the US as far as product arrivals are concerned. My guess is that the drive will appear here in the Winter of 2003 the earliest. I won't bet on it though

NONE of the threads I listed above has any relation with the webmaster of DVDplusRW.org. All people who posted in those threads are biased because you think DVDplusRW.org is there to promote DVD+R/RW?

$300 is the most likely figure I can guess. But probably only in Japan initially.
