  1. Hey
Im kinda new to capturing and Ive heard people talking about capturing from the 1394 port. So my question is how do I capture through that port?
    Thanks a lot

  2. The 1394 port is used in general for transfering digital video from a DV camera to your hard drive. What source do you want to capture from, TV, VHS, analogue cam, DV cam ?. Basically if you hav'nt got a dv cam you cant use it to transfer video. If you want to capture from another source other than DV cam you need an analogue capture card.

Actually, that's not completely true. A realy nice way to capture analog is to use a Dazzle Hollywood Bridge or the Avid/Canopus ADVC 50 or 100 to convert a S or composite signal to 1394 DV in the box and capture with Premiere, Ulead etc... thru the firewire port. A moderately new pc has enough horsepower to capture it nicely, macrovision can be 'avoided' and you can then convert a DV avi to MPEG 1, 2 or 4 anyway you want - even if it takes a long time. You wil need a big capture drive (40 gb is about right) and use NTFS file system or segmented capture in FAT32 but IMHO quality of the capture is second only to uncompressed.

I realise that this was an option, but the question was could the 1394 port be used to capture video. I was pointing out that the only source the 1394 port could "capture" from (independantly with no other hardware)was a DV cam.

  7. You can capture analog video with most of Sony's digital camcorders as they have an analog pass through (i.e. an analog to digital conversion) feature. It is a viable alternative to the canopus.
