is it possible to improve the picture quality of a conversion <divix/avi> in Tmpge ? I'm thinking it's a pixle problem. Thing is I have a crystal clear copy of a movie that I converted from divix to mpeg <useing the all in one guide in forum> and when I copied it to cd or copied it off the tube to vhs the copy in eather case came out poorer quality from the original. On a side note if anyone has used and set a good standard for the filters and when to use them <noise and stuff> that would be appreciated more than gold
Thanks for the help all,and happy Fathers day to all you dads out there

mahb,
Here is the greatest suggestion I can give, assuming you are
convert those divX to VCDs.
Follow these steps:
* buy the VHS** movie(s) They're cheaper than $~6/VHS vs. $~20/DVD
VHS. Go to: K-Mart, WallMart, or those outlets like BJs, or SAMs
for these VHS cheapees.
* capture to AVI @ 352x480
* encode to VCD (or SVCD if you're experienced)
* burn to CD
* play on your DVD player
* you'll be much more happier w/ quality vs. those divX files
you've ben downloading. You don't know how many times these
files have ben encoded and re-endoded, and now you D/L a few
of them, and well, quality'wise, ...you'll have problems w/
some of them.
VHS Quality, IMO, will be better than those lowe res. divX files
you've ben D/L - course, I could be wrong, he, he...
But, I've ben doing this for some time now, and am VERY
satisfied with my VHS-to-VCDs.
Oh, right, improving the quality of those divX'es. . .
hmmmm, not too much can be done. Really. You could use those
smoothers / temporals / soften blocks, etc., but you're really
just pushing pixels around (I call it, "smudjing" like finger
painting, he, he... ) But they will help in giving you the
illusion of less blocks. And, if that really helps you out
w/ these divX files, then use them.
* tmpg's "soften blocks"
* vdub's "smoother" or "temperoals" and their other variations
* AVIsynth's "temporals" and "smoothers"
vdub and AVIsynth are used as frameservers to tmpg.
Also, just remember, that all those divX files you D/L off the
net, you don't know how many times they have ben re-encoded and
shared over the net, and you're D/L'ing them, and NOW, you wanna
re-encode them. Please expect to see a degrade in quality, usually
the color is the most pronoused visual disapointment. They usually
washout or look too light.
** here's a small sample of some VHS movies I've just purchased
recently and encoded to VCDs:
599 * Jerry MaGuire - a friend from work wanted it - she was very sat.
599 * Twister - came out excellent, even those twisters, he, he...
599 * First Knight - for friend from school
599 * Ghostbusters - for friend from school
599 * Godzilla - always wanted
599 * Big Chil - supperb! - for a friend
All the above movies came out excellent. Not a DVD rip, but still,
since I'm making VCD from MY DVD collections (I already have the DVD)
VCD is more than enough for me. I have the quality down pat with these
VHS-to-VCDs and they pretty much look just as good as a DVD rip, though
not as vibrant or rich, though some could fool ya.
Well, what can I say. I felt the urge to spend a little. I wouldn't
have done this, if they were all DVDs. You figure it out, $38 vs. $120
I don't normally go out and spend so much on VHS movies like this,
but I had some help w/ a few of them that I was doing for others.
