I am really inexperienced, and the VirtualDub filters to remove subtitles are so complicatd I don't even know where to begin. Any help?

The Vdub filter (Logo-away) etc, will put a block on top of the text, it wont remove any subs as they are now part of the picture.
If they are in the black borders, you can crop them out, anywhere else, Forget it !! -
Use this method (copy of TMPGEnc 2.55x required)
1) With TMPGEnc, under video source, open up the
dat movie file on your vcd.
2) Click on settings, click on the advanced tab, double
click Clip Frame and set mask to crop out as much of
the sub titles u can
3) Click on File, then output to file, then mpeg, then give
the saved movie a name.
