I have not seen whether this is possible or not so i'm asking the kind ppl here. I was torn as to whether this is an authoring question or not, but anyway here goes. I was wondering whether it was possible to use a CDR to contain DVD material. VCD format is in lower quality, and DVD media requires me to purchase a seperate DVD burner, however i don't see how a DVD player can tell if it's playing a DVD-R or a CDR (provided it reads both normally). So essentially if i'm going to make a 700M movie on DVD-R, can i just use CDR instead somehow? Thanks for any help.

The DVD player has to know what kind of media it is to figure out how to handle it, DVD and CD are very different. As for putting DVD content on a CD, it depends on what you want as your end result.
If you just want higher quality than VCD offers, you can use SVCDs or high-bitrate/high-resolution nonstandard VCDs. These will play on many DVD players.
If you want fancy stuff like Dolby 5.1 or full DVD quality, you can use "cDVD" or "miniDVD" format, which only works on a very, very few DVD players. Of course, you can only fit around 15 minutes of DVD video on one CD, which limits its usefulness as much as the almost complete lack of player support. -
cDVD would be perfect, SVCD is still lower res than DVD is it not? 15 minutes is all i need, but if i need an $500 player to read it than n/m, I don't see cDVD in the compaitibility chart, is there anyway to know what players support it?
Also where can i find what high res SVCDs are acceptable for a particular player, i'm thinking of using one of the APEX models, it seems to accept a wide range of media. -
cDVD aka "miniDVD" is very poorly supported among stand-alone players. If you just tried out a random player, it will almost be a certainty that it won't support this...
However, there are a few players that do support this if it is important to you. I suggest you search the forum for "miniDVD" for more info.

Yes, SVCD is lower res than DVD (480x480 instead of 720x480). You won't notice a difference on most TVs, but you will notice the lower bitrate of standard SVCD. Some players can handle nonstandard high-bitrate XSVCDs, though.
Not sure about high resolutions, but I think the DVD Player list on this site includes information on high bitrate support.
