  1. Hi all!
Well, the parents have finally decided that what they need to be truly happy in life is a vid capture card What we primarily want to do is capture some pics from VHS videos we have to print on photo paper and to capture a few TV shows, etc.
I've been searching the net for quite some time and it seems to me that opinions on the best cap card are very mixed.
One thing I've noticed though is that there are always people who are very happy with their card once they finally decide to get the right software/drivers! I've already got a copy of PowerVCR from a friend and I have Vdub, etc. for when I encode/decode movies, what I need now is a good capture card that will let me do good resolutions and capture screenshots. (Most of the time I'll be encoding to DivX so I don't know if that factors in because some cards have hardware encoding, etc.)

Anyway, for what I want to do, here are the cards I've found that seem to be in my price range (I'd say about an $80 max):

    1. Pinnacle PCTV Pro

    2. ATI TV Wonder VE (only $50, it'd make me happy if someone suggested this card, hehe)

    3. Dazzle Digital Video Creator 80

    4. Pinnacle/Iomega PVR?? Someone mentioned this card in a post as being very high quality but I've yet to be able to find any reference of it on the net.

If anyone knows of a better card than these 3 that is at or under about $80 (maybe a little over if it's really good) that will let me capture good quality video and get screenshots, that would be really great. Also, are there any cards in this price range that would let me record video BACK to the VCR or camcorder?
Thanks a TON in advance everyone!

  3. Don't go with the ATI TV Wonder. Don't go with a USB device like Dazzle 80. However, the best choise is a basic BT8x8 card like the WinTV, Cybermail video, and PCTV Pro should also be a BT8x8 card. If the BT8x8 card does not come with good drivers, you can download free generic drivers that take full advantage of the card's capabilities.

On my wish list, I would like to see a BT8x8 capture box connected via Firewire. It should be able to handle uncompressed 720x480 at 24 bits via the Firewire bus (or even USB 2).
