Baldrick the Webmaster helped me with a similar problem,
he told me to use virtualdub to extract the audio as a seperate file
and then use tmpengc to convert. You will need to save the audio
as uncompressed, I can't remember the settings offhand.
The link he gave me was
    www.vcdhelp.com/virtualdubaudio.htm
    Cheers for now.

I forgot to say why you need to save the WAV as uncompressed,
if you don't the sound goes out of synchronisation. This is because
the sound is saved as VBR (variable bit rate) which doesn't convert well.

  4. thanks for the info. I've try what you asked me to do. and it work. but now i am having a weird problem. in my avi movie, the audio doesnt come in until.... about 8 seconds later... well, because of that my audio time and the AVI time is off. that means I would have to cut the beginning of the movie. thats hard to sync the audio with the movie... any suggestions???

If you have got Adobe Premiere, import the file, then drag it onto the timeline, right click on the video track and unlock the video and audio.
Then move the audio track backwards or forwards, play the preview and when you have got it synched, save it.
