I have recently installed a PCI firewire card and I can now capture very high quality AVIs from my digital camcorder.![]()
However, there seems to be a lot of motion blur in fast-action scenes. If I freeze the frame I can see that the image isn't just blurred - there is actually a 'ghost' image of the fast moving part of the image which casues a flickering effect when viewed at normal speed. I have tried Scenealyzer and the MGI Videowave III that came with my firewire card and they both give the same results.
Is this normal for firewire capture, or is there something wrong with the software, card or my motherboard?

Theyre not stripes - thats down to the interlacing. These are actual ghost copies of objects in the direction of the motion.
An example of what I'm talking about is at http://www.goldrose.demon.co.uk/scene0001.jpg
I've read the other thread on this subject, and theres a few suggestions such as using VirtualDub to filter the video, but I've had no luck so far. -
Yes, you're right, with "stripes" I referred to the interlace artifacts.
With deinterlacing, the artifacts are getting blurred.
To prevent these in the first place, you should remember this when recording the footage: avoid fast horziontal moves(ie. panning). -
What you are seeing is entirely normal and is due entirely to interlacing. If you look closely, your "ghost" images are made up of horizontal stripes. They are just exaggerated by the fast panning movement of your camera.
DV via firewire 'capture' is simply a file transfer. The DV on your hard drive is identical to the DV on your camcorders tape (i.e. interlaced).cheers!
