hi,
i am relatively new to dvd authoring/ripping etc. the first thing i tried was ripping dvd's and converting to avi, then re-encoding to mpeg2. this worked quite well (apart from audio sync problems and the amount of time it took). one of the key benefits of doing it this way was i could use spruceup or ulead dvd movie factory to create dvd's with my own menus/buttons/chapters etc.
i have found that using IFOEDIT saves time and allows dvd's to be made with no loss of quality/audio sync, which is excellent. i have successfully put just a film on a dvd-r by stripping extra's so it will fit, and splitting a dvd9 over 2 dvd-r's and keeping all the extra's.
what i want to do now is rip vob files from a dvd and then create a menu system direct from the vob files, i don't know if this is possible or which software could do it. it only needs to be a basic menu, the reason is i have a lot of tv series box sets that i want to rip, i.e. buffy. each episode when ripped and stripped is about 1.7 gb, so i could put 2 onto a dvd-r. but i would like a menu on startup that gives me the option to select which episode i want to play.
any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

I have been creating menus directly from the originals for my backup disks. Heres what i do, although there might be a better way this way is pretty easy and it works. Use smartripper to rip the vob to your hd. It will be labeled vts_#_o.vob. the # is the number corresponding to the number of the movies vobs. Then us vobedit to demux the vob you ripped. youll probably just ant the video but you can get the audio as well. Then i dont know if this is the best way to do it but rename your m2v file that vobedit created to .mpg. unless you have a video editing software that will take m2v. I use ulead video studio 6, and then i just cut the video and use it to create a bmp from the frames of the movie. You can then insert that bitmap into your autoring program and add buttons to make it functional. Hope this helps.
