  1. I tried smartripper but i can't seem to get it to work. I can get the audio but not the subtitle

    Simply rip the dvd in movie mode, leave the Stream processing tab alone unless you know what you are doing. The *.vob contain the video, all audio tracks and all subtitle streams.
    Rip the subtitle off the *.vob with vobsub or subrip to a different subtitle format, that you can use for dvd to avi or dvd to (s)vcd conversions.
