  1. I downloaded a music video from the net.

Burned it to VCD but the display is half the height that it should be and at the top of the screen. When i then loaded this mpg into Premiere it says it is 352 X 244 (PAL). Presumably this is why I am only getting half the size displayed on play back (in Windows Media Player it is fine).

How do I re-encode this to the correct resolution? Do I need to convert this back to AVI and then how do I correct the resolution with TMPEng? Just use the normal VCD template or do I have to alter some settings?

    Thanks in advance

352x288 is PAL. Did you really mean 244?

Provided the aspect ratio in the source is OK (I would check it in PowerDVD or Zoom rather than Media player) you should be able to load the mpg directly into TMPGenc to recode. Then choose the correct VCD template to fit the framerate of the source (presumably PAL?). Unless the aspect ratio needs adjusting, in advanced choose Source aspect ratio 1:1(VGA) and Video arrange method Full screen(keep aspect ratio).

  3. Yes I did really mean 244 which would explain to some extent the weird picture that is half height on my tv screen.

I have already tried loading the clip straight into TMPEng and reencoding using the standard VCD template.

This does not work and just gives a messed up video stream. The video slider moves in Windows Media player but the picture stays static on the last frame of the video.

Can someone please tell me how I correct the ratio? If I converted back to AVI and then reencoded using the standard VCD MPEG-1 template would this correct the resolution or do I need to do something else?

    Thanks

In which case you probably have an error in the mpg. A vcd mpg should load into TMPGenc with no problems. Try to demultiplex and then multiplex it again using TMPGenc's mpeg tools, making sure you choose the VCD option. If that gives an error still, we'll try something else. Running through the VCD template will correct the resolution. It's a bad idea to go via avi, because that means an extra coding stage, and at each stage you lose quality.
