I am very new to creating VCD's and I have a few questions that would be happy to get an answer..............
Is it possible to use avi-files for a VCD???????
It seems, from what I have read, that if you want to convert an avi-file to mpeg, you have to use several programs. Is there one program that does it all????????
Thanks in advance.........

It depends on the audio/video codecs used to create the AVI. Chances are you will need to learn serveral different ways to convert to VCD. Read the 'how-to's' at the left. Then start a conversion project and we will help you along the way.

OK, I tried using the small program Avi2Vcd, but the end result was really crap............
How do I keep the quality????????
Should I use another program?????? -
What kind of AVI do you have? Are you sure it isn't DivX? Did you downloaded it or capture it? Do you know the bitrate or resolution of the source AVI? Also, rememer: Crap in = Crap out. Try TMPGEnc, It will convert your AVI to a VCD compliant MPEG-1 ready for you to burn it. It it considered a very good encoder, but it is not the fastest encoder out there.

It is a VERY good quality downloaded avi-file
I don't know the bitrate or resulotion, but I can use Virtualdub to get that info.............right??????
It's OK if TMPGenc isn't the fastest, I'll try that one.......
It can convert to MPEG-1...........shouldn't that rather be converted to MPEG-2 or is TMPGenc not capable of doing that..........or does that matter at all...........?????????
Sorry if my questions seems lame.........hopefully I will get the hang of this soon....... -
mpeg1 is VCD format and mpeg2 is SVCD format. tmpgenc can quite easily make both. Just be sure to select correct template (found in load of tmpgenc) I prefer svcd- better quality. But be sure your dvd player can play svcd before making any

Don't woory about finding the resolution or bitrate. You don't really need it in TMPGEnc. It will find it itself. Like cheftaz said, use MPEG-1 for VCDs. If you want SVCD(MPEG-2) remember TMPEGEnc has a thirty day limit on MPEG-2 conversion starting on your first MPEG-2 conversion. After that, you have to pay.

I tried the TMPGenc, but I have some difficulties when entering the right settings.............
I have this 350mb avi-file I want converted into a mpg for VCD........ when I try to encode this I end up with a setting where the mpg-file is several GB.....................
Is it possible to set the program to the same size........and hopefully the same quality?????????? -
The only thing u need in tmpgenc is
load>video cd (ntsc or pal depending on where u live) that is the template now just encode. It shouldn't be several gb
