    Hello,

just tried my first avi to svcd conversion with TMPGEnc last night and found that it took at loooong time! To process 8.5 minutes of video, it took 6.5 hours... which I had to kill in the morning once I woke up.... Is this a reasonable encode time for a 400MHz processor, with no other apps running to compete with it?

  2. reasonable time for a 400 Megahertz processor? jeez thats slow, in fact, you're running the same setup I am. except 256 MB ram, which ended up helping a lot. No, 6.5 hours is not a good time, what are your settings? Standard SVCD? What is your source? divx avi from the net I suppose. Anyhow, you may just want to put the motion control search to Fast in order to get a good time, otherwise, close all the other programs and let it run overnight. later

For 400Mhz PC this is about that right. I have p4 1.7 and Avi to VCD takes about 2 hours. SVCD is 3 to 4 hours and DVD is 5 to 6 hours. Good thing Tmpeg has little box " turn off PC when process done" otherwise I have to wake up and turn off my PC. It has to do with your bit rate too. When I encode my DVD with 4000 bit rate it super slow and takes longer but as soon as I reduce the rate it faster. But if you want a quality SVCD it will definately takes time.

OK, thanks for the input folks. I guess I was hoping I wouldn't have to upgrade my CPU for a while, as it does everything else I need it to just great.
Can it be expected that a 1GHz and + CPU can do the same file in half the time or less?

theo, you must have a major problem/conflict with your computer system. Taking 6 1/2 HOURS to encode 8 1/2 MINUTES is not normal. Even 1 hour to encode 8 1/2 minutes would be an extremely long time even with a 400 mhz cpu.

    Something else is wrong!
