I am going to buy a VCR in the next few days. I would like to pick it up from Best Buy or Circuit City, but I might buy online. I want a S-VHS recorder, but that isn't possible in my sub $70 price range. I don't want anything used. Any suggestions please. What brands are the best? What features should I look for? My main use is outputting DV footage to tape w/ Pinnacle Studio 7 via composite video and RCA audio. I don't need Macrovision disabled, just a VCR built for precise recording.
Thanks
-Chris

um... wouldn't it be better to convert your finished DV files to VCD/SVCD? after all, that is what this site's all about

Well, my DVD palyer doesn't play SVCDs
And I actually get the same quality on a VHS then a VCD. Plus, no converting times! Also, I if I wanted to distribute a video product, VHS is user-friendly and is wider used in the general audience.

Hi,
People around here are spending more than the original cost on 10-year-old "editing" decks to repair/rebuild them. Why? Because none of the newer ones have anywhere near the same mechanical and electronic quality.

WTF are you talking about?!?! This post was about VCR recommendations, but I just bought one so thanks anyway. Allan 55, can you please elaborate? How does your post have to do anything with my topic? Why do you metion editing decks? I was under the immpression that most people here use Software based editing programs to edit video. (thats what i use)

Hi,
The point is that IMHO there aren't any good quality VHS decks anymore (Editing decks are from days before computers took over editing).
For example, I can play 20+ year-old rental VHS tapes with good results on my old editing deck (an expensive Sony) and the same tape is pure garbage on a JVC and a Panasonic (both current models).
It isn't that anybody wants to edit tape-to-tape anymore; its that these decks have high quality mechanisms and electronics which give much better results during playback.
