Last night I saw screens of the Lord Of The Rings (1st film) encoded to SVCD and the quality was outstanding. Could someone tell me how to get the same quality + wich program I should use for it. I don't care about the amount of cds to use

to rip a dvd you need "dvd decrypter", flaskmpeg and the divx codec. this will give you an avi movie in divx format. you can then use virtualdub and tmpgenc to create a vcd (2 discs generally) that will play in most dvd players

If you want the highest possible quality SVCD, Divx should not be involved at all. Rip it using Smartripper or DVD Decryptor, and frameserve from the VOBs to CCE.

how do you bypass the divx stage in making a svcd and will it work for vcd's as well?

For SVCD use DVD2SVCD and TMPGEnc. Usually 2 -3 cd with supurb results. It is very easy. It takes 6 -10 hrs on my Pentium 4 2.2 It is almost all automatic while you sleep
