I notice that when I download a movie from Kazaa that it is generally in AVI format. 60 min. is usually about 120-150megs. What program do they use to do this with. Any time I've ever fooled around with AVI the file size is gigantic. Just wondering, Andy

It is called DivX (high compression & high quality codec). You can download a freeware version of the codec from www.divx.com

Does this allow you to convert a mpeg file to AVI to shrink the file size. I've got this player/codec but have never noticed a "convert or encode" feature.

With right tools (see Tools section on the left) you can convert DVD's, (S)VCD's - Mpeg, Quicktime movies, Microsoft media files, pictures, etc etc to DivX format.
In order to encode to Divx you need (on top of DivX codec) a program to do the encoding. Virtualdub is very popular and most importantly it's free.
I think this is enough to get you started...
Happy encoding.
