    The problem is

    - you need a special DD (double density) CD drive to play these on.

    - you need a special DD burner to burn on these

    - once you have used the DD format to burn something, you cannot use them in other equipment apart for those designed for DDCD's, meaning the DDCD will not play in your DVD Player etc.

    - as they are backward compatible you can use DDCD's as normal CD's of 650MB - but what's the point when you have 700MB and 845MB CD-R's?

Curious, but what r the requirements to read DDCD?

Is it possible to release firmware for support on normal DVD players?

Firmware would be no good for old CD players to read these new DDCD's as you need a total different sort of hardware.
Here the specifications of DDCD vs. CD

    Objective Lens
    Playback:--- NA=0.50 --- NA=0.45
    Record/Playback:--- NA=0.55 --- NA=0.50
    Disk Size--- Diameter: 120mm --- Diameter: 120mm
    Thickness:--- 1.2mm --- 1.2mm
    Track Pitch--- 1.1 um --- 1.6 um
Min. Pit Length--- 0.623 um --- 0.833 um
    Scanning Velocity--- 0.90 m/s --- 1.2 - 1.4 m/s
