Are you making an image file with vcdimage and a GUI, and is the video MPEG2? I had this problem a while back and if you make an image file from your MPEG you loose your subs. Doesn't seem to be any way around it unless you use some other software, not freeware. Write more details about what program you're using to insert the subs, etc. Also what kind of DVD player are you using? Some DVD players don't support SVCD subtitles.

How are you trying to view your subs in WinSubMux's preview or in a software dvd player? There is currently no software dvd player which supports soft encoded subs in a svcd so the only way to truly verify if they are working is to test it on a hardware player.

Bullworth there shouldn't be any problems maintaining SubMux or Winsubmux subs after authoring with vcdimager. The subs are stored in the video stream, as long as you don't remultiplex then they will still be present regardless of how you author your disk.
