I am trying to put subtitles in a VCD using TMPGEnc and I have followed all the instructions given in the guides, but all my attempts stop in one problem that I can’t find any solution to. I convert the d2v file with VFAPI Reader Codec v1.04 beta to a …d2v-vfapi.avi file but when I try to open with Virtual Dub 1.4.10 I get the following error message : cannot determine file type of …d2v-vfapi.avi
I have searched for hours all of the forums but I didn’t find any similar problems so I was wondering if anybody could help me. Please don’t redirect me into any guides because I have been through all of them .
Cheers
Fitz

I've had this as well, try this to see if it works:
after creating your d2v file, before running it through the vfapi converter, look in the aviproxy directory in the virtualdub directory.
double click the proxyoff file (this removes the proxy settings from the registry).
convert the file using the vfapi converter.
then turn the proxy settings on again using the proxyon file.
hopefully virtualdub should load the vfapi converted file now...
you'll need to do this every tinme you convert a file (or at least I seem to have to).
some versions on virtuladub dont seem to have these files in the download, so you might need to check for a new version or get them from an older download.
hope this makes sense and helps !! -
clanger, >cannot determine file type of …d2v-vfapi.avi sounds, that you did not install the VFAPI codec.

I did install the VFAPI codecs, I have done all that are mentioned in the guides. I have also tried with and withough avireg on and off. Nothing works. I have also tried diferent versions of both the virtual dub and VFAPI converter. nothing works. I come to believe that XP have to do something with it, maybe they are not compatible. who knows.
the great mystery remains.
