ok...here goes...i just ripped a movie and followed all the directions in the guide..so far so good..but I noticed that i was encoding it as an Mpeg file. How do i leave it as a single AVI file (or DivX would be even better). I don't want to burn the file to disc..just make it available for others.

I should add that what i want to end up with is a single AVI file. I use WinMX and have downloaded many AVI files that are called "DVD Rip". I have Smart Ripper and DVD2AVI installed.

If you are following guides as per these pages, most of the How to's in the ripping section send you off to turn a ripped DVD into a VCD and assume you are going to play the finished product on a standalone DVD player. If I understand your process you are looking to end with an AVI as your finished product.
    You might try:
http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/flaskmpeg.htm it's been around a while and hasn't been updated for sometime but it all still works. This process will get you an AVI from a SMARTRIP.
    good luck.

  4. yeah, in my experience flaskmpg has been the easyest way to rip to divx... and the quality is really good for how easy it is.
