  1. firstly sorry for my bad english.

i have the following problem: the audio quality of the captured avi is very bad. while capturing the sound is excellent.

    capture prog: virtualdub version 1.4.9

    settings:

    audiocompression - PCM 44100 khz 16 bit stereo 172 k/s (cd-quality)
volume meter - very low (the higher it is, the worse the sound quality in the captured avi)
    video - overlay
    format - 352*288 YUY2
    source - composite
    compression - no compression (YUY2)

the capture card is hauppauge win/tv radio pci.

    my configuration:

    athlon 700
    384 mb ram
via on board soundcard (dont know the name.. via audio 97 oder something)
    2x 40 GB hdd
    geforce 2mx 32mb
    hauppauge wintv radio

the described problem does NOT exist when i capture with wintv2000 application by hauppauge.... the audio quality is very good in that avi i captured, but the video lost at least half of the frames. but i donīt like that capture application (wintv2000) because it is not as comfortable as virtualdub, so please help with the virtualdub configuration.

    thanks

I am yet a beginner but you might try this - extract the audio from your capture file with VDub (File - Save WAV). Then listen to samples of the wav file to see if it's good or bad. I thought I was having a similar problem until I realized that VDub does not always playback captured files very well. I believe this is because I use Huffy to compress but it may apply to other captures as well (apparently Huffy causes playback problems but does not affect the converted file). When I convert to to the target format (mpeg 1 & 2 so far) it plays fine, in fact the audio is usually quite good.

    FWIW.

  3. You don't mention what your sound card is, but if you are not capturing with a tuner, you are using your sound card for audio capturing. It sounds like you are over-driving the audio. If you are using a Turtle Beach card, it goes to auto level by default.
