  1. I hope someone can help me.

Last night, I installed VCDEasy, didn't use it, and then decided to uninstall it. Until then, my CD burner was working flawlessly.

Now, my computer can't find my CDR/RW drive. This is the message I get under Properties in the CDR/RW listing in Device Manager:

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

I tried a System Restore, but this did not help.

VCDEasy gave me a message about disabling CDRDAO and that my ASPI drivers may be invalid.

I don't know what this all means. But I do know that my drive was working perfectly until yesterday. Can you offer any suggestions?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

  2. To the best of my knowledge, VCDEasy doesn't do anything to your system that could possibily cause that sort of problem (e.g., it makes no changes / additions to system files, etc.)

This is confirmed by the fact that a system restore didn't resolve the problem...

I feel that there may be an actually hardware problem afoot here -- and the VCDEasy thing just a co-incidence.

    Wow Michael,

2664 Posts. I remember back in the days when you only had a couple of hundred !!!
I guess it kinda shows how long I have been away from this board.

    Best Regards

  5. This is Nina again.

Here's what has happened since you suggested there might be a hardware problem.

I checked to see if DOS could recognize my CD-ROM drive. It can. The drive works fine in DOS. It's just Windows XP that can't find it.

Could VCDEasy have contained a virus or something else that would have made this happen?

    Thanks for your continuing help.

  6. I have fixed the problem, and IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH VCDEasy SOFTWARE!!

I spent two hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech support, and they had me changing settings in the registry. Apparently VCDEasy changes registry settings. I had to erase changes with high and low filters (somewhere deep inside the registry.)

Of note, even uninstalling VCDEasy and doing a System Restore did not fix this problem. I had to do the Registry changes manually.

Therefore, I can only conclude that VCDEasy messed up my CD burner driver information. I will not use this again.

  7. I have heard from someone else who had the same problem after trying to use VCDEasy. He wants to know how I changed the high and low filters in the Registry, but the woman from Microsoft (the one who helped me fix the problem) talked me through it so fast, I can't find the place in the registry where we made the changes.

Does anyone know where to look in the registry for the high and low filters that we deleted in order to get CDR/RW back in working order?

BTW, I also had to reinstall my CD burning software after making these changes in order for WindowsXP to recognize my drive as a re-writable drive and not simply a CD-ROM drive.

    Hi NinaJane,

I really really really hope you are wrong and the reason I say this is I installed VCDEasy last night and then uninstalled it again. I havn't tried out my burner yet, but I will have to burn a CD tonight . . . I hope it works

    Hey Michael,

Even though I havn't spent much time on the board, I have been still doing SVCDs and some VCDs. I recently purchased a MiniDV camera and now trying to convert DV to SVCD. . . I though I had it all worked out

    Best Regard

  9. this all sounds nuts. First try aspi 4.70 and if that doesn't work install forceaspi 1.7. Also if xp ever screws it over (which it will time to time) into PIO mode. Just delete the secondary ide channel or primary if on that an let it redect your drive. I highly doubt that vcdeasy is the culprit. Sounds more like lack of knowledge of how hardware works in general.

  10. Well that's interesting.

NinaJane, I suggest that you e-mail delphi.stuff ( delphi.stuff@vcdeasy.org ), the author of VCDEasy with your observations / problems. Make sure you give details on the brand and model of your drive, other burning proggies you have installed, etc.

If the bug is real, it is important, though rare. VCDEasy is one of the best GUIs to VCDImager (the best and most powerful S/VCD authoring packages) and it is a work in progress.

Actually, I'm not entirely convinced VCDEasy is the culprit at all... System Restore "should" completely reverse any changes to the registry. I had a look at the registry changes under VCDEasy and they all looked quite benign to me... Perhaps, VCDEasy does something I don't know about so you should definitely e-mail delphi.stuff.

Anyway, best of luck. If you want to avoid VCDEasy but still use VCDImager for its S/VCD authoring capabilities, you could try one of the other GUIs (e.g., TSCV and VCD Composer) or alternatively, author the XML script files manually: http://www.vcdimager.org/guides

OK, I am burning a SVCD as I write this post. Looks like uninstalling VCDEasy had no impact on my system, all seems to be fine

    Best Regards
