Hi all! Never owned a DVD player before, and I'm in the market to buy one now, and I was just wondering if I could get everyones opinion on brands and models. I would like one that would play burned CD-Rs with MP3s, and I also get a lot of anime .AVIs and MPEGs online that I would somehow like to be able to play in the player. Maybe something that doesn't have copywright protection, you know, just for the future.

apex plays everything and can be hacked to remove macrovision

Apex players are real popular. You can search their users forum at www.nerd-out.com. But one of the more knowledgeable participants "freqmod" highly recommends the Daewoo DVD-5700/5800.
I would consider it.

If you have Sam's Club membership, another option is the Daewoo DVD-5800, which is $89.98. Disabling MV on that player involves an easy CD firmware upgrade.
Your Sam's may also have the Daewoo DVD-5700, which is a bigger version of the 5800, in a black case (instead of the silver-and-black mix used on the 5800). If it's still available, it'll be on clearance for $89.91.
