I've burned a lot of DVD+R disks lately, and they played fine on my
set-tops and drives. But it appears that as soon as I put labels on them (the standard Avery matte finish CD labels, or other kinds), there are HUGE problems with playing the disks. Is this a known issue, or has anyone else experienced this? I think I've ruined quite a few this way.

Hey,
I haven't tried to label any of my DVD+Rs yet, but was looking into it in about a week or so. Is it just a specific brand of labels that are messing up the DVDs? Also, what label stomper are you using? You might also want to ask at www.dvdplusrw.org a lot of people have DVD+R burners there and might have some experience in labeling their own.
