I have been at this for a little while and am always looking to improve quality. My Panasonic will not play svcd. Rather than trying to trick it I have concentrated on making the best xvcd's that I can. Could somebody please take a look at the following svcd to xvcd conversion and let me know if there would have been a better way. Used TMPGE took about 2:10 per disk and xvcd's are slightly smaller i.e. about 780MB.
Source: 3-cd movie. SVCD 2500 bitrate 25FPS 480x576 Non-Interlaced Bottom First(B) 1:1 Full Screen
Out: 3-cd movie. XVCD 2100CBR 25FPS 352x288 High Quality (slow) No Filters
Fits nicely onto 3 cd's. Looks and sounds pretty good and is even in sync.
Thanks
