I received an order of 30 disks from C.R.C in March that were absolutely superb (no failures and easily burned at 2X in NERO). I need more disks, so I asked the company if they still had that disk available (I queried the disk with "ADVDInfo.EXE" and it returned "MXL" as the manufacturer, which I am assuming is MAXELL). I got the following response from the company (all errors included):

hello, thanks for the email. we now have a different master that we use to produce dvdr. and our dvdr are 1x. now. thanks les.
It appears that they are now selling junk (I have gotten complaints from friends that even recorded at 1X, they have read errors).

So, does C.R.C. really make their own DVD-R? I'm afraid that the evidence says "NO!". I think that the company, at the very least, owes us an explanation to this statement prominently displayed at the top of their online store:

Producing and selling audiophile-quality CD-R and videophile-quality DVD-R at generic (Taiwanese) media pricing.
I'll not be buying from them again, until I am more than satisfied with their explanation - which I don't think will ever happen (because they won't last that long).
However, this puts me back to square one - namely, what low-cost disk will let me record at 2X reliably?
I apologize to anyone who may have bought these disks based on my recommendations / experiences and were unfortunate enough to get the Taiwanese floor sweepings.

Well, fine, guys, just go ahead and hijack my thread! You should probably just create another thread that says, "Sources for DVD+R Media". Most people here know that CD-RECORDABLE.COM only sells the DVD-R stuff.

Okay, guys, class is now in session:

    HP 200i (From MOOVYGUY)

    The HP 200i is a DVD+R/RW drive.

Well, actually, this post wasn't a request for help, but was more of an "informative essay", but I appreciate your help anyway. As for the "Lighten up, Dude", I guess that I forgot to add my "tongue in check" emoticon when I complained about the apparent (alledged!) "hijacking" attempt. I was just concerned with the other people who also made the DVD+R/RW mistake would miss all of your informative info on sites for the expensive media.

Keep in mind, DVD Forum is not a standards body. They can endorse whatever they wish, but they do not define.

As to the "+" format being a mistake, that remains to be seen.

Lets be civil here and NOT be jugmental over other peoples personal choices.

Remember, What's good for you is not necessarily good for me.
