mpg's freezing

hey everyone,
I'm not too sure on when this problem started occuring, All I know is that it's driving me crazy. Whenever i play media files (just video, mainly .avi and .mpg files) the player usually freezes. The only way to solve this is to shut down the player and start i again, and it eventually freezes again. At first i thought it was just windows media player, then i tried it with stuff like the divx player and the xing player. It happens on all of the players....i was wondering if anyone has had this and/or if they know how to fix it. I'm thinking it has something to do with a codec, or conflicting software.... but i have no idea. any help would be apreciated.

i and a friend of mine have exactly the same problem. i posted a message on this forum but no one helped me
are you running Windows XP home edition and the latest version of Windows media player with the DivX5.0 ?
this is a pain in the arse because i can't watch any of my DivX films.
PLZ help us because this is very depressing...
