Hey! I was looking over one of the forums here a few weeks back and there was a post about someone who could not delete some AVIs from their HHD, well I thought it was a wierd situation at the time, but now I have it and its very annoying!! I have both DivX movies and Mpegs that tell me 'they are being used by another programme and cant be deleted till you close the programme...' and theres no programmes running (Win XP). I have them in my Kazza shared programmes folder and theres 4 GB worh of them.. running outta space nowhelp please...
(By the way, this is hopefully in the right forum, coz it is editing a movie in a way...)
Sorry

Ok something is obviously using the files... Do you have Kazza or some other P2P running in the background? Press cntrl/alt/delete list your running applications and processes here and ill help you out...

Reboot your computer and then try to delete them!

There was a response I think in Alfred Poor's column in Computer Shopper on getting rid of files that won't delete. He suggested copying all the other files in the directory to another location, then going down into DOS and issuing a DELTREE command on the subdirectory with the offending file(s).

Just FYI you might try turning web content off for your folders, media player will load any multimedia files for preview.

first of all the problem is that whenever you select a avi file windows looks at it to see its attributes so that when go properties it can tell you wha codec and biterate etc.
But if a divx is damaged or half downloaded windows wont be able to find this information and thefore decides to search the whole file for its header whiles its doing this you cant delete the file, a simple solution is to simply leave the file selected for a while and when the file is no longer being scanned delete it.
this program will fix faulty divxs
[http://www.mpegx.com/download.asp?url=http://www.mpegnews.com/files/video/divfix_v1.07.zip]
just select the file and then rebuil the index

I have run into this same problem, and sometimes using the "del" command in dos does not work, however I've found that every time the "del" command dosen't work, the "erase" command does... and it is used exactly like the "del" command i.e.: [ c:\program files\kazaa\my shared folder> erase filename.avi ]
Try that, it should do it every time that "del" dosen't 8)

If you're downloading movies try this:right click on file>properties>in"attributes"check "Archive"
and uncheck "Read-Only" and "Hidden".
Also try My Computer>click on your harddrive(show all content),sometimes files get squirreled away there. -
Start regedit and remove the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D9 4-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

I had the same problem before. In my case I was using Vurtualdub with Aviproxy ON (see under \virtualdub\aviproxy directory). Switching it off (by clicking on the REG file) solved the problem. This might not be the solution to your problem but it could be for some other people.

Ok, the LOCAL_KEY_MACHINE idea from Glock didnt work - thanks anyway, I cant figre out about the web content thing on this OS (XP), the Divfix software did not seem to help
There was nothing in my computer and the Vdub idea didn't work :'( Thanks a lot for the ideas and support.. what the hell do i do now??? What might be using it?

k sorted!!! Thanks guys and gals, I don't know which one done it, but after a few reboots it seems to have got rid of the problem!! Yay!!!
THANKS & BYE -
I had this problem tonight......i couldn't delete or move some of my downloaded films.......!!!
I cured this by simply right clicking on the file and ticking "read only"......then they moved and deleted a treat.....
Maybe because whatever program they were linked to couldn't write to them anymore......
Thanks

This is usally only a problem if its a file in KaZaa that another person is geting from you and your connected to KaZaa.
Disconect and you can delete them cause they are no longer in use. -
I also have this problem sometimes. The strange thing is when i select multiple files i don't have this problem. So i just create a txt file with notepad in the same dir. Then select it along with the avi and no more problem.

Hi
I have had this meself too. The problem is this: Windows explorer is trying to get attributes from the file/s, just as humpadingdong explained earlier on. But explorer.exe is not finding anything good to show and holds on to the file so that it cant be deleted as dansleethmovieman said 'they are being used by another programme and cant be deleted till you close the programme...'.
Solution:
1. open taskmanager and kill explorer.exe
2. delete the files you want deleted
3. start up explorer again either from Start - Run menus or from the taskmanager
4. problem solved - go get a beer
Hope this will help somebody out there.
