  1. Hello guys,

I have been making VCDs for a while now but have always used CD-RWs because my DVD Player (the one connected to my TV, NOT computer) plays VCDs which are burned only on CD-RWs. I am pretty sure this is not how it is supposed to be so if anybody has experienced this or has a solution to this please let me know.

Sad but true: some brands of DVD players just will not play VCDs burned onto CD-Rs, and there's usually sweet f.a. you can do to change that.

The big brand-name DVD players are often the fussiest. You should have bought a cheap Chinese player like an Apex (AKA Hiteker in Australia/New Zealand) instead. Mine plays just about every kind of disc known to man.

  3. the Sony's usaully only play cd-rws, my 560 will not play anything but cd-rw and only in vcd format, that's why I got a Pioneer 434, it plays svcd, vcd mp3 dvd-r, dvd-rw, cd-r and cd-rw media.

    Hi fAt_sUnNy,

I have DVP-S560D. It plays VCD, XVCD (up to 2500Kbits/s), SVCD (no menu support) on CD-Rs with silver coat (like Princo and CompUSA brand, and generic by Princo), and some others (green coat). Doesn't play blue and yellow.

Also plays DVD Video on DVD+RW disks perfectly.

    Regards.

Sorry, mate. We use the phrase "sweet f.a." a lot here in Australia. It means "sweet f***-all," which basically translates to "nothing whatsoever."

If you're really set on using CD-Rs for your VCDs instead of CD-RWs (and there are pros and cons either way - CD-RWs are compatible with more standalone players and allow you to make test discs & avoid coasters, but CD-Rs are cheaper), I'd suggest tracking down the CD-R brands these other guys have mentioned. You could also check out the DVD player compatibility list on this very site. It's damn helpful.

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

Have a peek there and hopefully you'll be able to find out what brands of CD-R your player will accept and which ones it won't.

Failing that, maybe there's a CD-bootable firmware upgrade floating around out there somewhere in cyberspace for your player? I managed to get one for my Hiteker to ... shall we say, "enhance" its capabilities. Worked like a treat.

Dude I had same problem with smy sony dvp-s535d player, but using princo or pyrod blue/silver based cd-r;s work every time. Source these and you'll never look back, trust me.
CD-Rw no problem for testing on player but a bit expensive for huge collections.
