  1. why do people rip dvd's to Divx?, why not a standard avi?
Fair enough ripping down to MPG has its disadvantage when being downloaded (due to larger file size), but Divx causes so many problems to us. (most problem posts are Divx related, is'nt this telling us something)
Look at the time, effort and different programs required to demultiplex then multiplex and so on when converting a Divx to (S)VCD.

Just rip dvd's to standard avi or mpg and make creating (S)VCD's easier for every1.
I have just bought Dup-DVD and i copy all my dvd's to share on p2p file sharing.
I now only save as avi or mpg so any1 downloading movies from me can have an easy task of burning to VCD.

MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR THE BEGINNERS, remember how long it took you to get the know how!!!

  2. When you convert to avi, you have to use a video codec. Divx is only one of them.

  3. DiVX is by far the best avi codec. And what do you mean by a "STANDARD" AVI?? All avis are standard! I would like to know which codec you are using that is so "standard" and is so much easier to work with than DiVX!! NOTHING compresses better (maybe asf) and NOTHING is nearly as good quality!! As long as you have all of your codecs, DiVX operates the same way as any other avi you have. The only reason I can think of for your frustration is that you either don't have all of your codecs or that you are working with an avi that has irregular AUDIO codecs (maybe VBR MP3's or AC3) because those don't work normally, you have to convert that to wav then use it. Either that or you are just stupid, and don't know what you are talking about. GET NIMOS CODEC PACK!

  5. the main reason people use divx is to watch films on their computer and not in their dvd player.

i don't know that much about divx but i know that if you had a 600 MB mpeg-1 file, you could convert that to probably half the file size with divx and not have a noticable loss of quality.

I think Standard avi means uncompressed avi. Too big to capture anyway! I do think DivX is the best. Yes, I do use DivX with VirtualDub.

Divx 5, Xvid, Real 9 or the soon to be released 'Corona' from Microsoft are all derivative implementations of the ISO MPEG 4 standard. If licensing hurdles can be overcome quicktime 6 will be released and it allows playback of ISO MP4 files and other players will be soon to follow. I remember a time when IAuthor was the only SVCD tool and everyone was using the Panasonic encoder to make VCDs. You are right - If you're a newbie stick to VCDs and SVCDs - but if you want the best quality for file space MPEG 4 is superior because it builds on what was learned in MPEG 1 and 2. Settop players are around the corner as MPEG 4 will be the standard for non-bluelight laser HD-DVD. If you have DivxPlus or an XCard on your HTPC, Divx or Xvid playback on a TV is awesome! My ATI AIW also allows me to outout to the TV but the quality isn't as good. It is very easy for me to use VirtualDub and my AIW to capture TV live to XVID. At VCD bitrates I get a much better result than live MPEG1 capture and I don't have to reencode the video (I do reeencode the audio which takes but minutes) There are now ways to do a Mode2 cd burn so I can get as many MBs of my avi on a cd as MBs of vcd or svcd. There are many reasons why MPEG4 (Divx etc...) if you are as comfortabe using it as you are MPEG1 or MPEG2.
