GRRRR ... got 2 parts to a movie, totals 816MB. Its been encoded as standard VCD so, 352x240 1150kbps video, 44.1KHz 224kbps audio.
The 2 files ends up being appx 81min 10sec, when I try to burn it using Nero.
So I tried to be smart and decided to reencode the audio down to 160kbps just so I can squeeze it onto the CD. Had some probs trying to find an app to do the conversion... but had some trouble (actually, I'm just stupid I had everying on my system already). Found BeSweet to reencode the audio from 224kbps to 160kbps. Tried to mux the files using tmpgenc, got some error about underbuffer or something... so dug out bbmpeg and had no problem. After both the files been done, they ended up been less than 800MB.
The problem now, when I try to burn it with NERO it says it needs to write to 84+ minutes.
I'm confused, this is not the first time where I tried to fit more onto a single CD doing what I expect to be the right thing but not turning out right.
Can anyone explain what is wrong and why I cannot fit tho onto a single CD? The 2 mpg files totals 80mins 49secs in play back.
The only other way I can work out to reduce the size of the mpg files is to work out how to convert the 29fps to 24fps and use the 3:2 thingie on playback. Now I need some help with this as well... Is there a easy way of converting the mpg file without having to reencode the video?
HELP!! ^^

You could try turning on the overburn facility in Nero, click on file, preferences, expert features. If you have already done this, try increasing the values.

I have already tried the overburning option. But my medias doesn't seem to support it. It gets write errors at the end. I know sometimes it works... but it doesn't always.
The funny thing is why would a smaller mpg file require more space on a CD?
Maybe I should try a liteon 24 writer instead of the plexwriter 12x hmm -
There comes a time when all the extra effort is just not worth it. The cost of CDs is so low, just split it with TMPGenc mpeg tools, and use 2 CDs! 8)

I would have used TMPG to reduce audio bit rate and get an edited template and reduce the Video rate as well during the encoding process, you have to make sure vdc setting is set to non-standard in TMPG, and in NERO turn off standard compliancy or what ever they call it.....
I burn all my movies to one 700mb disc ...also I have never enabled my overburning in NERO and have put as much as 760mb on one disc. -
I had the same problem so I downloaded CDRWin and VCDEasy. I put the mpeg into VCDEasy and made the BIN and then burned it with CDRWin. I burned 803mb on a 80min CD-R. And it works fine in my Standalone DVD-Player. I think that you could put the two files into VCDEasy and make a BIN that would fit the 80min.

Ok, thanks for all the input. I figured out what my problem was.
I was correct in assuming that reencoding the audio in a lower bit rate and then remuxing them would give me a smaller file and would fit onto a single cd.
The 2 files I have are 618MB & 197MB. Total they are 816MB. They are encoded to standard VCD so having 224kbps for audio, I reencoded the audio as 128kbps.
What I did wrong in the first place and caused my troubles was Nero. I had to UNCHECK the CREATE STANDARD COMPLIANT CD option. The CD is now 750MB and I fited the 81min video with out any overburn.
Hope this helps someone else out there as well. -
Not yet, but getting there
Basically I had about the same situation, I had a 780Mb MPEG2 file (160k audio, 1500-ish kbit video (VBR)) but it would not fit on a 700M cdr. Before you say 'well duh' - 700Mb CD's claim to allow for 80 minutes audio or video.
My video was only 60 minutes, but this was because I used a non-standard bitrate. Still, does anyone know how this works out? The way I understand it you can fit essentially 800M onto a 700M cd is because mpeg in itself has error correction mechanisms so the CD doesnt have to (or not as much).
Does anyone have some calculating info on this? My guess btw is that this really is a bug in nero, writing a normal iso-ish cd instead of an actual (S)VCD, since when I tried overburning it stopped at about 90%, which works out to almost 700Mb. Figures. Somehow I believe Nero didnt turn off the error correction.
For now I still believe I should've been able to fit that 780M datafile onto the cd. I hate having to unnecessarily cut back on bitrate and therefore quality just because Im making some writing boo-boo.
Oh, and I did try the non-standards compliance but that didnt helpIs there some other 'raw mode writing' option?
