Hi Folks
I alreaddy tried it in the Newbies forum but no one knows an answer. So i try it again:
I have two serious probblems. The first one is when opening an . wmv or .asf file with the wizzard TMPG opens a window "Judging fild order" and freezes at 7%. When i try it without the wizzard and want to set the source range TMPG freezes too. Why? When opening with VDub it says that the file is wmv2(??) and there is an decompressor missing(??)How can i convert an .wmv to SVCD?
The other question is whitch settings do i have to use with an source-format of 512x384, 720x576 or 512x400? Is there an special trick or something? I tried various settings but got only conehads or the picture is spread.
Hope someone canb help me :P
Thanx

I don't know the answer to the first question, but for the second, if the source is an avi whose aspect ratio is correct when played, source aspect ratio should be set as 1:1(VGA). Video arrange method is most often set at Full Screen(keep aspect ratio) If you choose another, make sure it is one of the *keep aspect ratio* variety! 8)

div,
i did one of these conversions a bit ago,,got it to convert to svcd by frameserving with V-Dub.
Use virtual-dub 13c,,,i think is the one that opens asf files.
edit-delete what u dont want, resize with virtual dub, 480x 360 or 480x320 for example,,,and add a letterbox of 480x480, this should give you your file centred. Frameserve to tmpgenc, load your template, check the aspect ratio, i.e. full screen , fullscreen(keep aspect ratio),,,and encode.

@banjazzer:
Thanx for the hint. I´l try it again. I thought i did but im not really sure. But doesn´t FullScreen(keep aspect ratio) cut off the left and the right edge of the picture? avi is played correct on Win mediaplayer.
@El_Mero_Zooter:
Thanx a lot. I hope this will work. Is there any loss of resolution when i do this? When i add a letterbox i cut off the edge or does it work with either 4:3 and 16:9?

Right, so we are talking about an avi source! Center(keep aspect ratio) cuts off the edges of the picture. Full screen won't. If you play back 4:3 or 16:9 you should see all of the picture. If you don't with 16:9 you could alter the Video>>Aspect ratio to 16:9. You will have to load the *unlock* template to do this, though, and then make sure that by unlocking you have not altered any of the other settings! The default 4:3 is usually fine, though.
There is always a lack of quality with each subsequent encode, but provided you encode to an equal or lesser resolution you probably won't be able to detect it. -
OK Thanx
I´l try it this weekend. I need to get a newer version of TMPEG first because the old one expired.
On www.dvd-ripp.de i found an instruction for converting .avi to svcd and they chanched the GOP-settings. Is this advisable? I tried but i got a verry blocky picture. perhaps i did something wrong.
I fist try your advisory.

I would only change avi to SVCD if it was very good quality. I think SVCD is best made from DVD, personally. I am also quite happy with the quality of a well-made VCD, even though some scoff at this. 8) As to altering the GOP settings, the nearest I get is by experimenting with templates others have created.
I don't even get chance to watch a fraction of the stuff I convert. If I started experimenting with GOP the fraction would tend towards zero. -
Hi
I know I´m boring but my Harddisk is full and i don´t want to burn the films as wmv.
The firt one: Are there any templates others created which are better than the standart ones? Where can i get them?
The next: I tried to open the .wmv with VDub 1.3c. First it says "saving (or converting? i´ve forgotten my papers) frame structure" and then an error message "... no decompressor for .wmv2 found (unknown)". Whats this? Is there any codec missing? WinMedia Player gives back the file very fine.
Tjanx for ur patience -
So I see tha nobody is able to convert an avi / wmv2 into an great svcd. Shit happens.
I´ve looked it up: VDub 1.3 first opens an window "Reconstructing ASF index block" and then freezes with" Could´nt locate decompressor for format wmv2 (unknown)". I´m using Win2000.
PLEASE HELP!!!
