Sonic Foundry used to sell an excellent AC3 encoder called Soft Encode but it is no longer commercially available.

Sonic's DVDit PE can convert your WAV files to AC3 but you are restricted to one or two channels only, not the full 5.1.

You can use TMPGEnc's mux feature to easily mux .m2v and .ac3 files together into one single .mpg file. The Dolby Digital audio track is preserved.

  3. If you are lucky to find a software that will encode into AC3 for you, I would suggest you use Maestro (if you are lucky to have money to buy it) to multiplex these two streams. It will do an excellent job and will author a DVD for you as well. I understand you are talking about DVDs, since you mentioned AC3, and not about that crap which is called VCD, whatever letters it has in the beginning (like S)...

igornt, SVCD may have a very good quality, it mainly depends on you and how you make it. I have many of them with excelent quality.

Btw, it is impossible to use AC3 with (S)VCD. Only DVD supports AC3 sound.
