  1. Wasn't Sony one of the companies that created the +R/+RW format? Then why aren't they using it? LOL

Ummmm....no...$5 for 2x certified quality -r media is about right. Why don't you say ....$1.80-$2.20 for >1X<.........? Ashamed? I'd be.
2X media is now $3.18 online.

Yep. Dunno how good they are. People say online that the el cheapo Meritline 1X discs ($1.30-1.60) are not good, but the $1.80 Meritline ones work OK. Haven't heard much about the $3.18 2X ones.

Otherwise, bigger name brand discs are usually at least $4 online (for both DVD-R and DVD+R).

  6. My point is...

If Sony is one of the companies who created the DVD+R/+RW format, why are they putting DVD-R/-RW drives in their new computers?

    Rigormortis setting in?

I don't believe all the BS and bickering going on in this forum. Is this where the 3rd graders hang out?

Anyway, what I wanted was reasonable price and compatibility with set top DVD players. My goal is to put my VHS and Digital videos on DVD so I can see them on my TV at home. DVD-R fit the bill for me. I have played these homemade DVD-Rs on both my set top DVD players flawlessly.

If it works for you then that is all that matters

I would recommend getting a test disk before any purchase to assure compatibility on home players

I totally agree! I wanted a DVD drive to put movies onto. I wanted speed, good price on media and compatibility. I get all of that with my DVD+R!

As time goes on, price and compatibility do not matter that much because everything will become cheap enough and compatible enough. Both DVD-RW and DVD+RW have already entered into volume production in large enough scale.

The real deciding factors will be speed and features such as 4x DVD writing and Mt. Rainier.

  11. Something tells me that DVD-R and +R are BOTH more compatible than John1290 is with girls.

Reminds me of the SNL skit 'Nick Burns the company's computer guy'.

My OPINION on the formats for what it is worth...

-R will beat out +R which will eventually become obsolete. -R has a better footing as a standard and is the Mac standard. (Simmer down John, I don't care how you feel about Mac's, the standard there DOES mean something) Also 4X DVD-R's are coming out, and the +R companies are making drives that do the -R's...which I feel will leave the +R less plussy to the sheep.

Also, when shopping for blank deals online and on ebay, I've been able to find -R's much cheaper...just a simple fact. I too recently had to make a decision on which to get and this was a big factor. And of the 50 or so <$.70 DVD-R's I have produced, only 1 has been a coaster and I don't think was the media's fault. All have played in all 4 of the home DVD players I have tested them in.

Now if these opinions make me a sheep or a spazzoid or a buttplug or whatever, so be it. In the last month I have made over 50 -R DVD's, with over 100 more blanks waiting and spent a total of under $300 with shipping to do so...drive and media. Sure I was lucky enough to find GREAT deals on ebay, but I do not feel I would have been able to do this if I would have went for +R.

So have fun, take your ritilin, play nice with the other children, and try to pick up a non-tech hobby or 2. I dunno, knitting perhaps. A little balance is a good thing.

PS - KMart yarn is SOOO not superior to JoAnn fabrics unless you are into crosstiching with the rest of the sheeplovers at the old folks home.

LOL hehehh awhahwhahh Wow...that was super funny man! Thank goodness human DNA is more compatible with the eggs from a female dog's ovaries else you might not have been born. Or maybe in your case a MALE dog's DNA was more compatible with a human female's egg? LO L OL LLO LOL )

You remind me of an idiot beating a dead horse. +R/-r hybrid drives were probably made to give -r people a bridge to cross over and leave their slow 1x DVD burning drives behind.

    And it isn't worth sh*t........

-r is the standard on the mac since there was NOTHING ELSE AVAILIBLE at the time they wanted to include DVD burning on their crappy line of POS computers. What PC companies back -r? mac? Now, let's take a look see at MAJOR IBM COMPATIBLE PC makers that support +R....Sony, HP, Compaq plus other types of companies....AOpen, IO Data, Logitec, Memorex, Mitsumi, Philips, Ricoh, etc etc. -r sux and isn't going anywhere. -r might be the first with 4x burners but that will quickly be eclipsed by 6x +R burners.

Don't forget to mention that your 0.25 -r discs are only rated for 1x burning! Your 2x "certified" media are pretty much the exact same price as +R 2.4X discs.

Yeah...with +R, you would have been able to make about 75 +R DVDs with over 125 more blanks waiting and spent a total of under $280 with S&H to do so. Drive and media.

That's why I'm an avid gun collector.

  13. I strongly suggest you review Kusanagi's earlier post in this thread. Furthermore, I suggest you read the many number of good review on the net and I suggest that you start with the relevant section of the DVD FAQ. (search for "DVD FAQ" with Google).

There are many reasons DVD-R/W is probably better than DVD+R/W if you are primarily interested in video disc authoring. DVD+R/W, however, may be better for PC specific functions.

The are reasons there are standards and DVD+R/W is at a severe disadvantage in this regard. As mentioned before, most newer DVD players are compatible with DVD-R and many units now advertise this fact. This has yet to be the case for DVD+R/W.

Ultimately, the issue between DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W will become mute as burners now exist that can handle both standards and you can take the best of both worlds.

@ john1290: grow up. You are risking getting banned.

    Regards.
